I drove down the A11 yesterday, it looks pretty unpleasant to cycle down.
There was a cycle lane, somewhere under all of the parked cars, other than that lots of cars in the clear two lanes doing around 70.

• #104
I'm surprised you noticed all that whilst doing 70mph

Had to slow down to shout at a cyclist

Why bother?
I just clip 'em with my wing-mirrors. That learns the fuckers.

i also ride this route, often late at night!
Its shit enough that its a virtual motorway FFS.The joys of the Bow fly over... go over it and enjoy the near misses or go under and enjoy a Left hook or a SMIDSY.
Not there is another choice route!

I do the Bow flyover twice a day, it's not that bad. It's better than Bow Road. And if you're going down to Stratford the momentum practically carries you all the way to the roundabout, like you're on a pinball machine.

sad to hear about bike-muggings on the Greenway. was happy when I first moved to london to find it nearby, cycled on it most days for my first two years in the city. could be a bit bleak, but the thick bramble hedge was full of wildlife, and every few benches there would be pairs of east european guys drinking and looking morose. always felt pretty safe, good memories of blackberry picking in the sun and elderflower collecting in the evening.
maybe the access closure and building works have affected it, you can't get on at Manor Rd so there is a big secluded section. also, there is probably an unfortunate correlation whereby the more a place is used by cyclists, the more unscrupulous types think to go there and rob them...

I'm thinking also of the blackspots mentioned elsewhere on the forum which are known cycling routes but quite quiet. Don't spend much time on the greenway these days, but you didn't used to see many groups that looked like trouble hanging around - they would get bored, not enough people to pick on. I guess I mean quiet places that are known to be used by cyclists - doesn't that make sense? (or not).
Lots of other variables in how safe somewhere is, sure. Overlooking and business (busy-ness?), escape routes etc.

This pisses me off no end when I hear about this route being full of chavvy dick turpins as I ride it loads to see a mate in east ham and am often pissed on the way home. In fact if you hear a whooping sound late at night after a spurs win, it'll probably be me on my way down the overpass barking at the moon.
I'd like to petition the east drinks to set up some elaborate sting operation to coincide with their drinks session.
Do the 5th floor do call outs?

Couldn't possibly leave the pub. Beer doesn't drink itself you know.

Can't really argue with that.
Should really bob down to one of these shindigs soon.
What's the hazing process like?

That's too east for easts

Perhaps time to get tooled up . .

The flyover's quite fun though.
Definitely a preferable option to the roundabout underneath--I know by now, but it still very much surprises me how much of the queue is heading for the motorway instead of to Stratford. Various plans are being mooted for the A11 Bow Interchange post-2012, but I don't know what stage they're at. All, as far as I know, involve demolition of the flyover and creating a civilised junction, but it'll be a hard one to get right.

How many other bridges could they build to take bicycles on a parallel road or two? You have options like the underpass on Devas St/Twelvetrees Crescent at Bromley, or the rather difficult Tredegar Rd/Wick Lane bridge, but both are too much of a detour. A bike/pedestrian bridge at Bromley High St would be better.

Guess you must be lucky. The amount of times I have nearly knock off by drivers who leave it late to not go over the Flyover or going towards Stratford cars pulling out from the side road on to the high Street had some hairy moments on the way home.

I have this huge bloody chain that people use to lock motorbikes/scooters etc. I put it across my shoulders like the guerilla fighters carry machinegun ammo... Moment any mofo comes up Ill be swinging that biach like a loonatic!

Well, we'll see more E-W crossings of the Lower Lea Valley re-established post-Olympics, but you're right, there ought to be more. Cycling in Newham is severely constrained partly because of the lack of decent routes west.

I appreciate they needed the road there, but when Poplar was carved in two to build it, that was a crime against humanity. Mind you, the Chrisp St estates were no better.
pah. d-lock= great weapon
