Boom!
This has been on the TV in our office all day so far. I missed the time trial and am angry.
You didn't miss much - it was crap. The big fat miner came last - who knew - and they all got really really bunched up quick on account of there not being much room down there. Waste of time really.

Its a beautiful human story. In most cases, even in developed countries, miners trapped deep underground, for a long period of time, perish.
Its worse in third world countries. All hope is given up at the news of any underground rock falls or cave collapses. It happens all the time, monthly and weekly. This is actually a bit special, and gives hope to other families in the future, who find themselves in the same situation. Though I doubt NASA will be involved again at such a level.

I understand the importance of this event from a "key learnings" or "best practice" perspective etc but i just find it irritating that it has literally dominated every major news channel since last night and continues to do so.
They are fine. They will live. They are more than likely all going to become richer that i can ever hope to be. Move on.

I would not describe Chile as Third World and certainly not to a Chilean.

BBC Snooze 24 is really scraping the barrel now; "Aaah, YESSS! There's the hug!".

It's painful isn't... The "arrival protocol.." (hug wife, hug president, wave to crowd) the "signature sunglasses" FFS...
However it was interesting to hear about the political undertones of it all. The Bolivian president is there in order to try and up his flagging approval rate.
