I don’t think I could get clean lines and have it thick enough if brush applied. I suspect the pros are either freakishly good with a scalpel or they use stencil masks printed on a plotter.

Have you tried frisk film for masking? - sorry if I might be captain obvious - I've not scanned the whole thread. I'd say they do the plotter thing, but over the years I've become mentally good with a scalpel - years of graphic design and mock ups.

frisk film
I haven't tried it but that looks useful - wonder if you could create your mask, apply it to a blank shell then liquid mask the entire shell then remove the film - taking the mask with it - to create the detail needed.

In other news something I ordered from HK arrived today - eight weeks late but amazed it got here. Was declared at $20 and a 'gift' - which I did not ask for but that May have oiled the wheels somewhat.

Interesting thought. Worth a go.

I suspect this is how very intricate designs are done.

I quite like the shell - less space ship, more gnarly buggy

Plastic wrap off - still needs a backing in white but who has that kicking around right now?

Nice work bud!
I smashed this up quickly today, fade didn’t work as I hoped, but the window masks did and I’m actually happy with the result.

So overall, I seemed to have the basics OK, got the colour order mostly right, avoided big spplats of paint and runs.
One big mistake - mask not thick enough. Was impatient and applied it with the airbrush. Even though I did many coats, it wasn't enough. Will use LPHV gun in the future.
This was a Tamtec replica shell so a practice and bashing job. Think I'll dial back my ambition for the next one and focus on getting the basics right! Was quite pleased with the blue to purple fade so might do something simple based on that.

Yeah the fade looks great bud, and I hear you on the liquid mask, it’s super frustrating to get right.
I gave up as brushing it on made it way to thick, ended up using washi tape and using a scalpel to cut the window lines out.

I’ve done the wing and another shell with the LPHV gun (4 coats) and it’s much, much better.
That said when I did the Avante shell I got excellent bleed free results on the window with basic tradesmans tape.

^ Sweet.
My OG setup was a decent brushed motor with electronic ESC so wondering if I can get it working again as is.
Need to check if can run Li-Po or use the original Ni-Mh.
Also the batt insert is oval. So only C-cells might be suitable.
I'd got the impression you were spraying the mask on and then cutting it away with a scalpel. I thought it might be easier to get clean lines by painting the mask on with a brush.
Apols if I have the wrong end of the stick.
