Missed what rob said at the top^^^^ but yeah Cliff seemed really nice bloke, spoke to him a while back when he repaired a road hub for me (really cheaply). I'm told he's big into the pedal car scene! Madness. There's one in the window of LMNF at the moment...

Road cranks are not track cranks
What difference does it make? The forces they're subjected to are the same, no?

Cliff said "I've wanted to make this taper for 20 odd years, and basically I do what I like most of the time anyway." or words to that effect.
Did anyone get close up pictures of Ti/carbon track hubs? Make those gold Phils look like System Ex ;)

Isn't that just another way of saying recumbent?

If you ride outboard BB'd road cranks and then a set of old square taper ones you can feel the difference instantly.
I did that about 8(?) years ago with MTB when the saint and hone c/sets came out, yes there was a massive difference between that and sq taper on 175mm.
However, I have yet to notice a significant difference in speed between octalink and sq taper at 165mm on the track.
Obviously in tests, there is no significant gain (if any) by using outboard cartridge bearings on an indoor track, in fact the extra stiffness is possibly over ruled by the increase in bearing friction.

If the UCI reduced the max weight of a track bike to say 5.8kg then we'd see some improvements in componentry but right now it's a false economy investing money in R&D for the track market especially when you consider the fact it's still a marginal sport.

that logo is biiig! yup. just the classic royce R would do the job - do they need to be as beefy is that? they look overkill imho

If you've got a BB/down-tube/chainstay interface strong enough to withstand excessive flexing when paired with external cups, it'll do the same with a square taper.
I've run the same frame oversized alu frame with both Centaur sealed internal, and Centaur UT, and there was no miraculous difference when accelerating uphill out of the saddle on the same climb. The frame still moved laterally. Anything else was imperceptible/irrelevant.

Come back and talk to us when you've moved out of the 3-figure wattages girlie man.
-
• #92
3-figure wattage? I wouldn't know about anything that low, as I don't believe in the efficacy of single-legged pedalling drills.
You fat Kiwi cunt.

There's a really good article on Royce in Rouleur Issue 12 if you can find a copy floating about.
Random fact: Cliff used to make the toilet flush handles for Concorde...

It's about the 14th time it has been posted, this week.

3-figure wattage? I wouldn't know about anything that high, as I don't believe in the efficacy of courier-specific pedalling drills.
You're faster than that Kiwi cunt.

If i remember correctly he said that the machine he got to make the cranks and chainrings cost over £50K which apparently was a deal. he also gave out a couple of the magazines about the pedal car races. they are def not recumbent bikes.

Here's an interview done in 2003. More than time for something more up-to-date.....
Its a top interview though. ;) Worth a read.

Personal opinion: Disappointing. Not keen on mirror finish, the 5 arms look rubish. logo looks rubbish. Maybe the photo doesn't give it justice but still, disappointing.
Professional opinion: Just looks like a blatant engineer's job with not much design sense.
I think they need to employ me for a while. Anyone's got a contact I send my portfolio to?
