  • Hey track dudes.

Royce UK have new track cranks and are looking for feedback from people in the know.

    You guys should contact them.

  • They also have a lighter version of their hubs, sporting a titanium nitride coating, but have said they will easily anodize in any colours.

Their new crankset has an inboard chaining, reducing the q factor. Though I'm no trackie, I brought one of the two guys from Royce over to the Lfgss stand, with one of the new crank arms. They really are keen to learn what people think.

It would be good if somebody went over to their factory and did a write-up about Royce.......a la Teddy at Brooks.

  • Royce would like feedback...

Isn't that supposed to work the other way round?

I'd happily give feedback on cranks, but I haven't seen them, let alone used any, and there doesn't appear to be an email address on their website.

  • Cycle show thread has some Royce bling but yeah, how are you supposed to give feedback other than on their appearance?

Appearance alone does not a good crankset make.

  • just call the factory direct, 01425 620062 someone needs to be able to test them for them.....

  • they can send me one to test, if they want it used on the track only, I'll try to break that flimsy looking BB axle.

firstly, cranks for track use need to be compatable with all 144bcd chainrings and not have a dumb chainline, I hope they have addressed that.

  • I'll happily test one in a commuter situation. All those stop-starts, traffic light grands prix, skids.

You were the person we were recommending.

I suggested sending you + a photographer down to Royce (near New Forest) to check out the factory and write that up, but also to look at the product and give initial feedback and then for you to suggest one or two people who have the time and energy to work closely with them to refine their product. The latter part of all of that really does mean you'd get prototypes as that feedback loop wouldn't work otherwise.

Track forum, unless you're down the track you're not in the running.

Most of the stress to my cranks comes from throwing my bike at the wall/fence/ground when it 'misbehaves'.

Ah, but can a track test replicate the stresses of being run over by a taxi?

I've never seen a taxi on a track. I've seen an ambulance though.

  • spent 10 mins chatting to the head of engineering on the stand, their stuff is absolutely stunning in the flesh very shiny pantoed cranks
their idea for the BB / crank interface is very clever much more contact time / area

  • if they could send me a BB and crank i would hapilly review their stuff for them

  • is this a proper track crank or a bling shiny hipster skidder bauble of choice?
i guess they need to to decide if their target market is doe-eyed sycophants or sportsmen?

  • That's no way to talk about RPM, he's not doe-eyed!

  • RPM, dicki and other trackies... sort out who wants to invest the time to help them, and arrange for ONE of you to be the representative to give them a call and sort it out. It should be someone with time to really provide good feedback and to test it on the track. Someone who is able to communicate with them by phone during the working day.

To other people reading, blaggers would not be welcomed by them and I'll be pissed if blaggers were using the LFGSS name to say they'll help and then just took without giving back. This is an opportunity for the trackies and if you're not a trackie this is not for you.

    Proper track crank.

  • That 3 sided cam shaped BB/crank interface seems interesting from a technical point of view. I expect the test will be as much of that as the crank itself.

  • the guy said the design of the cranks was a long process
trying to ensure any force is put through a straight line rather than a curve so all the force goes into the pedal stroke and not into flexing thwe crank
i don't have any bikes bling enough to carry off the cranks !

    hubs though !

Good point, if anybody from this forum was going to break a crank, it would be one of the Terminators.

I had a look at the cranks, and they look like jewelery. Very chunky and very bling.

The BB looked interesting. Not sure if the world needs another system

I wish it used outboard bearings.

    What do I know though.

He was saying how it's a design from tank wheels that had square tapers and were braking during the war. so someone changed it to the 3 sided design which gave them 60% more metal to metal contact. He aslo said not to bother emailing him and to just phone him. he is there most days even on weekends.

  • I asked a few questions also, and the same engineer said that they would not force the triangular system on the track/fg public.
The square taper would be available as well.

I feel like such a fraud posting in the Track forum. :D

  • Are they standard 144 BCD? The chainrings were also very nice.

  • Yes they were 144 BCD
