  • Brother Cycles and The 5th Floor are getting together to organise an overnight ride from London to Brighton. This is not a race and is approximately 60 miles long so open to anyone who wants to have a bit of fun over the Halloween weekend.

We'll all meet at Trafalgar Square for Midnight on Saturday 30th October, riding through the night and arriving in the early hours of Sunday morning. Where we can watch the sun come up (weather permitting), have some food and gradually get trains back throughout the day. These start from about 3:30am so shouldn't be any problems there.

    Halloween Costumes!
Knog lights and Landscape Magazine have kindly donated some products as sponsors of the ride. We'll be giving these out to the best Halloween costumes in Trafalgar Square... so make sure to dust off your best costumes!

As for the route this is still to be finalised - currently we're planning on using the following:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-kingdom/london/864128654048542840

(you have a choice at the end of tackling the dreaded Ditchling Beacon or going around this and taking the A23 into town - as show on the link above)

We're doing a practice run this weekend so this could well change - if anyone has some suggestions as to a good night route then we're all ears.

(we've done the practice run now and the route is perfect)

Please note that this will not be like the Dunwich Dynamo in that there will not be any wardens, the route will not be lit with lanterns etc and we will not be handing out any sort of route maps before we leave. Therefore please print out your own route maps before you leave and make sure that you have sufficient food, inner tubes, tools etc to be able to make your own way to Brighton.

That being said please keep a look out for your fellow riders! If someone in your group gets a flat then stop to help them and they'll do the same for you and we'll all arrive happily and in good time.

It would be great if anyone interested could add their names below so we can gauge what sort of numbers will be turning up.

    Hope to see everyone there.

    Cheers
    W

    10. skive and gonna hit the ditchling.
  • Good stuff, Frosty. The map link in the OP is broken, but I imagine you've already seen that.

The route you're planning to use is very good--I often do the leg to Gatwick exactly the same. Be aware, though, in case you hadn't seen it, that Gatwick as a halfway stopping-point has caused some problems lately.

Also, why are you planning to avoid Ditchling Beacon and going in via the A23? The A23 is probably going to be OK at that time of the morning, but I was just wondering why when Ditchling Beacon is always such a highlight. :)

  • Hey Oliver, i've put a link above to a mapmyride route - that should be working?

We did this route last weekend and it was fantastic - but yeah had a little difficulty navigating Gatwick but think we have it sorted now... involved going through a hotel car park and jumping a wooden gate! All fun though.

As for Ditchling i've never tried it myself as riding fixed gear - although I hear that hasn't stopped a lot of people so may try it this time. Think it's quite nice to have the option at the end of either tackling Ditchling or hitting the A23... which was actually a nice downhill cruise into Brighton last time.

This time I'll stop being a pussy though and try Ditchling!

    Will you be joining us?

  • @Skive - are you riding fixed? If so I'll join you on Ditchling....

  • hey frosty.
    fixed for sure buddy.
been up the ditchling twice, got up it the last time.
whole lot of grit and keep pedalling! worth it at the end.
the view and the downhill into brighton are amazing.

  • I'm in then.

sure I'll be regretting that decision on the night...

  • Hopefully in for this, but probably heading to Muddy Hell @ Herne Hill first. Will try and stay sober enough.

  • its a good 10 minutes of grunt but well worth it.
