Well a lovely and detailed response as expected so thanks all. I suspected it all to be a shitty mire of nepotism and 'mates of the bloke' cack and the feedback here seems to back that up. "It's not what you know, it's who you know" New Fast Automatic Daffodils said that and look what happened to them. I've played on and off for the last 19 years so I'm no wallflower but then I'm also bone idle.
Accidentally lying is always a good bet, got my last paid job after the barmaid was asked to get me to list my musical/club/culture interests. And (This is totally true) the pen ran out and I'd only managed to scrawl my name, number and the words Manchester Hacienda before she took the paper. Manager rung later and nearly bit my hand off.
I presume he thought I was Mike Pickering using a false name.
Anyway, digression is taking me away from Charlie and Lola. Maybe we start a non baclslapping, low commital club night. Securing a venue is the risky side of ambitious so perhaps we could host it nowhere and not tell anyone.

99% of the DJ's I hear nowadays are shite but their mate is manager/owner of a bar or club
what irritates me is paying £15 to go in somewhere, and the throbber in the booth is just playing pop/urban shite, not mixing them nicely at all, just switching the fader near the end of a song. Sometimes you can even hear the mix on the CD mix, if you know what I mean

depends what you play dude.
if your a 'small dj' then you will be booked to fill in gaps / play in lounges / bars etc or be booked by a promoter if they think you will bring people.
PM me with what sort of stuff you play or a mixtape and I can try to point you in the right direction.
Also, worth noting, you can be the best DJ in the world but if you don't bring a load of mates down to fill the place out - ultimately putting money in the till you won't get too far
