  • Does your mate have a website?

  • so he's not even built a prototype yet? But wants to start selling them?

  • Bullshit. He saw some other guy's sweet-as-fuck design, and decided to steal it to make a quick buck

FFS it's a shelf that fits a top tube in.. it's not fucking Penicillin..

£300 is frankly outrageous unless you are after a piece of art furniture - £65 seems pretty bloody reasonable - when I get some money this week I'll be back to look into this..

that is, if the lfgss pitchfork squad hasn't burnt this thread down by then

  • he just wants to find out who is interested and no he doesnt have a website. well i cant really say much else until his work is here on display.

  • Is he a chippy though or just someone looking for a fast buck?

  • Yep not patentable, free market, but should not use other manufacturers images.

More about wall type anyway. Could be a landlords worse nightmare.

  • I won't delete the thread as some have asked. I think the replies speak volumes about people's view of this.

    Advice to your mate:
Make an original product, have his own website, show images of the actual product... then think about selling.

As it stands right now, your mates product is vaporware and as we don't know that it will differ it's hard to think he hasn't just stole the design.

  • 35 posts.
Been on the forum for 3 days.

Surely this can be counted as spam. Fuck off and rape another website for your money making needs.

  • jesus im just the middleman. His product will be on display next week, please hold judgement until you see his version of it.

haha true geek chic. I think stuff like this demands a forum-levvy

So it is a copy then?

    The levy is reputational damage.

  • Maybe you should be more careful of when to offer your marketing consultancy abilities to your mates.

Additionally, to market a product, you may want to use something other than a link to another companies blog.

  • I have invented the Shelfbike - Specifically designed for walekners/pushengers, it has a 2x4 top tube to put their messenger bags on when they parade their bikes round town.

    Its $300USD isn't it?

Just re-reading your post, do you mean its outrageous to spend $300 on a bike hanger or do you mean they're overpriced?

If its the former, then yeah, you're prolly right.

If its the latter, then no. It's not. They seem to be a quality, bespoke peice of furnature made from a relatively expensive wood. They are also being made in North America, so all costs increase accordingly (plus the guy needs to make some money at the end of it).

For what it's worth, I'm going to make something similar at some point. Basically* ripping off the guys design (I quite like the idea of using metal tho). However, I'm not going to knock up a couple extra and sell them. I don't know if that's bad, but as I'm not going to be buying one of his in the next 5yrs I don't feel it makes much difference.

+1 to most of what's been said.

*the qualifier is just because I don't know how they're mounted, but it will prolly be the same.

So if you'd come up with the concept you wouldn't have any problem with someone else coming along, stealing the design then punting out much-cheaper copies? Really?

  • It's how Shimano got into bike components

  • ^^ this.

With any luck he's protected it and will take suitable action.

Re: Shimano - it's basically how all Jap manufacturing co's got into everything.

  • "Hubot" is remarkably close to the name of a particular bespoke watches company, who advertise their pieces as "art". Additionally, as they're a desirable commodity there is a faily large market is fraudulent copies and replicas.

Is there anything that you've posted on this forum which couldn't be linked to plagiarism of some sort?

  • im going to close the thread and will reopen once pictures are available.

  • jonnyrau, er Hubot wtf? Every post you start causes grief.

Is this stem and bar combo the same one that was on the infamous Aende?

  • FFS it's a shelf that fits a top tube in.. it's not fucking Penicillin..

    Sadly this is true.

To link to somebody else's website is a really poor show, BUT...It's not a difficult thing to make in all honesty and it was never going to be long before people made their own versions.

A perfect example of this very situation is pedal straps.
There have been at least two other people on here who started making their own straps which were pretty much identical to JOLS...and hundreds of other companies worldwide all make straps that are practically identical...a big factor in peoples decision of which to buy is 'Which is the cheapest'.

If somebody comes up with an original idea and somebody else can make it cheaper, the majority of people will happily buy the cheaper version.
There are plenty of custom builders making frames for hundreds of pounds and there are plenty of mass producers who copy those designs and sell them cheaply to people who can't afford the expensive custom ones?

There are hundreds of bags which copy PAC's ideas, but most people complain PAC's are too expensive and buy cheaper versions.

I saw a company the other day who had made a blatant copy of my rosie pouch...it's just the way things are when you can't patent things for whatever reason.

I'm pretty sure that somebody in the world has made something almost exactly the same as this shelf at some point but just not bothered to post it on the internet, but probably wished they had when they saw a $3OO price tag on this one.

As has been said...the quality on the cheap copies will probably be lower, so people will simply choose quality or price...it's the way things always are.
