  • The curry goat was always brilliant at Alberts.

Is Taste of the Danforth on now?

  • Then there's Alberto's down the road on Bathurst. Always good to order from there when you're drunk.

I know a lot of people didn't take to it well, but I always loved Amato's pizza. I really wish we had a decent pizza fast food industry in the country but alas it is utter shit in comparison to North America

  • And for the love of God do not go into Tim Horton's for coffee, you will be sorely disappointed indeed.

  • Have a mooch around Casa Loma, never a bad time to walk around a castle in Canada built by a mad Scotsman.

Be careful of cycling over the tramlines as well, they can be pretty vicious.

  • Amattos... forgot about them. YUM.
@ Jason, I don't see what's wrong with you going to hooters :)
(I've been, I dont' think its that great)

  • I got lost in Casa Loma when i was about 4 years old and they had to send a group of people to find me. Seems I wandered into the horse stables looking for a pony..

  • s'alright, Im sure theres some delightful places to find there, EB knows Im just playing him around

  • the store you mean is la carerra

    http://www.lacarrera-cycles.com/

la bicycletta is a really nice store full of roadie stuff further north.

    Curbside.. +1
and then La Bicyletta by Nadir Olivier for nice track swag - on Harbourd.
Sunset Grill in the Beaches for good breakfast..
And if your at Christie and Bloor - there used to be a burito place there that was AWESOME
Failing that there is a fair number of brillliant Korean restaurants - look for / ask for "spoon" its the one all the korean's eat at - its great.

  • Nice little bike recycling project right here

  • go on the Steamwhistle brewery tour.. its right next to the tower downtown.

  • Dreeeddge.

I'm moving to Toronto for a year or so leaving around the September/October time, simply because I didn't want to regret passing up the opportunity.

As such I don't have many plans in place yet, but I was wondering if anyone is able to tell me about what it is like to cycle around there on a day-to-day basis? I plan on getting a bike at the earliest opportunity, however I understand that some of the cycle infrastructure was removed a while back? (I did google but can't really find anything much with any decent detail) Whilst I'm looking for work I'll also look to get involved volunteering with bike kitchens, I figure it won't be a bad way to meet people as well!

  • A bike lane was removed from Jarvis. It's not the end of the world, but it's obviously not a inspired act and says a lot about the current administration (which you should read about if you want a laugh/scare).

Cycling isn't too bad. Different from London - traffic is often much faster, there is less filtering (although much more last time I was there than when I lived there 10+ years ago), streetcar tracks are not ideal for cyclists for a few reasons (wheel getting stuck in them, slipping on them in the rain, not knowing where they are in the snow leading to wheel getting sucked/slipping- you will learn the techniques of holding your breath as you cross certain intersections less your breathing through you off balance).

But! It's a pretty cycle friendly city overall. Especially in the core. I have a bunch of friends who are keen cyclists in Toronto, and was one myself, as a messenger and someone who commuted all through the winter. There are some great bike shops as well.

They've also got a pretty good bike polo scene now, if that's something you'd be interested in.

  • I did read that the (current?) Mayor wanted to "End the war on the Motorist." Which did make me roll my eyes!

That's great news though thanks. I've no idea what job I'll be getting over there but am hoping that I'll be able to commute all year round. It also looks like there are a bunch of good long distance rides and trails I can take.

  • That's the polite stuff he's done. In terms of cycling he's essentially said cycle deaths on roads are the fault of cyclists using the "if you're going to swim with sharks" metaphor.

He also appears to smoke crack.

Make sure you get a place "downtown" (a misnomer of sorts - the area from, roughly, Dufferin to the Don Valley, South of Bloor - obviously there's room to move around, bu that's a real rough section). Toronto is a sprawling mess of a city and I could imagine few things more bleak than ending up in the 'burbs of it.

  • That location stuff is very cool. As I'm not leaving for a while I haven't fully looked into it yet, but that'll be useful soon! Thanks!

  • As an infrequent visitor I could not agree more with Horatio as to where to stay. The city does seem keen on tearing down the nice bits and putting up "condos".

The N American sprawl is sad, some thing you will notice on the drive from the airport.
That said, lovely people and a friendly town....

  • I'm collecting pictures of awesome posters I'm finding while visiting Toronto. Enjoy!

  • .

  • Apologies for digging up an old thread but I'm off to Toronto for 2 weeks and I was wondering if there are any good bike shops to check out? Also, do they have a local forum that I can check out? Keen to do some group rides whilst I'm there...
    Ta!
    Ru.

  • Bikes on Wheels in Kensington Market is a goodun. I think they organise rides too.

Riding through the ravine can be nice in the summer, but it'll probably be a bit soggy this time of year.. If you've got the time, head out East towards Scarborough Bluffs - so beautiful, and if you wiggle your way through the Beaches and take a longer route, then you can (almost) avoid the ugly burbs..

  • Did you already go?

Very Very High end road bikes: Blacksmith
    Community feeling awesomeness: Urbane
fixie skidder stuff: Bikes on Wheels

Nice casual ride along the lakeshore west to the white bridge in etobicoke then up the humber bike path, loads of small hills in humber valley on roads in and around high park.

  • Another dredge for this one!

I am moving out to Toronto for 18 months in a couple of weeks.

Quick browse suggests I want to live downtown, and cycling isn't a complete disaster? Rather than take a bike was planning on getting something out there. Was looking at getting something "on trend" that I can use both on and off road.

Any tips/advice/ride buddies would be awesome.

  • Late to the party but did you manage to get a bike once you got here?
