ride this saturday: london worthing london
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=44253steady pace. route not suitable for fixed unless you are hardfuckingCore.
204km, 1445m climbing according to bikeroutetoaster.
So, on average flatter than PBP. (Do that route 6 times and you'll have done the same distance as PBP but you'll be 1330m climbing short.) ;)

Wow... I was kind of intrigued / interested in Paris Brest Paris, but looking at the kind of training you guys do so early before the event, it's like I would need to do some training just to start thinking of joining your training!!
Not ready, not this year at least...!

Cascade 1200 (US)
Endless Mountains (1200)
Perth-Albany-Perth (a few weeks ago)
Sofia-Varna-Sofia (Bulgaria)
plus others... -

I now feel quite unwell. To think we could try to kill ourselves at least once a year.

French surrender before the campaign even starts on home soil!Ha!... and teasing my french pride won't make me pedal faster, I physically can't start training with a 200k ride... Longer ride I've ever done is London to Brighton, and I took the train back!
Is there was anybody here who would start training with more "reasonnable" distances, I would consider starting training after christmas and new year fat meals!!L

That was taken on a 400km Audax (Snowdon & Coast 400).
(Inappropriate gear as I was checking stop points of derailleur.)
good call.
i use one of the large orlieb saddle bags for commuting as i can fit jeans, shirt, sweater and underwear in there pretty comfortably. had figured that i'd use it for audax too. good to see the concept proved. -

maybe we should give it a go as a warm up - six times in a row with pushups every few miles to make up the lower total elevation.

steady pace
Can you confirm what a steady pace is for the next training ride (204 km)? I read you mention average of 40km/h on a 130km ride, which properly scares me...

around 18mph/28khm actual rolling speed, ie not including stops.
there are bail out points all over the south of england in the form of rail stations - i've done this myself plent of times and there's no shame in riding for as long as you feel like then bailing out and heading home.
i guess this will be a little faster than last saturday's cruisey roll which james describes at the top of this page and the stats for which are here - http://connect.garmin.com/player/53216866 -

MUD GUARDS
If it's wet these will be required or you will be at the back of the group.
Note to self
Fit the guards that are sitting on the kitchen floor
-
• #140
good call on the mudguards
got me a face full of dilute horse shit riding up from brighton in the rain last spring courtesy of the dude in front of me. -
• #141
Mudguards are not required on PBP, the majority of UK events don't enforce it either, just check the calendar to see if there is an 'M' in the codes to see if they are.
-
• #142
not required for pbp, but required out of courtesy for our training rides, unless you wish to be at the back of the group all the time

The same is sort of true for PBP. Not required but there are plenty of groups that will drop you (or, if they're not British) just ask you not to ride anywhere but at the back if you don't have mudguards with a proper mudflap.
Raceblades may keep the spray off you but they do nothing to stop the spray up into the face of someone following behind.
Mudguards are generally required on some UK Audaxes where the cafe owners of the intermediate controls have got annoyed at the filth left behind by wet/muddy cyclists. The organiser has an option of losing that as a control (which probably makes running such a ride impossible) or asking for everyone to have mudguards.

djmatt_ha, just clicked your link above, but my work pc is being a twat, the summary however shows a ride of approx, 130km, is that the distance you plan for Sat?
-
• #145
