  • Black handlebar that left some paint on your hand?

Have you not got grip on your bike?

  • sorry, my english is obviously not good enough for translating "andonize" - but also google couldn't help me
    http://translate.google.at/translate_t?hl=&ie=UTF-8&text=andonize&sl=en&tl=de#
don't know what it was. my hands were dirty, i washed them and everything was back fine. when i'm commuting (1 hour), i don't have these problems. maybe this occured because they are new - i don't know, will report.
i came to these forums because in the austrian forums, there was a link to this one when espressowheels.com was discussed. so i didn't know varno's wheels. moreover, i was looking for really cheap bikeparts for my polobike, so i bought the crank and saddle as well. here in austria, you don't (or at least i don't) find parts priced that reasonable.

i'd like to stress again: please stop hatin', post experiences and not thoughts and opinions of others. that helps way more. if it finally turns out they are shitty, that's also better than what's currently going on.

  • of dear, are these builds that espresso has done for people?

    http://espressowheels.com/gallery.html

my favourite, "Nuno is right at the top of the fixie universe in Portugal with Espresso wheels and crankset"

  • was it paint or anodize that came off the bars? why the fuck am i even bothering to ask, this should not happen, they are clearly shit.

so is GA2G a friend of yours? or why would you take his opinion over the account of the mechanic who has worked on 40 of the wheels?

the wheels must come in a pretty appalling state if they need to be worked on before use. many other companies can supply factory built wheels that are fine to ride.

or for a little bit more you could have a lovely set of wheels handbuilt by Varno

    http://www.lfgss.com/thread49556.html

Do we know if this is true or are we now accepting hearsay as fact?

  • anodised part shouldn't wear off straight away after the first couple days, they should be pretty hard wearing.

it took me age to rub the blue anodised off the nitto drop bar I was using.

  • andy its opinion over opinion, but no wheels should need retensioning before they are even used.

it has been made clear that upon ga2g's advice that espresso were thinking of doing this.

could Kilda elaborate a little more?

  • I agree.
I also don't think this thread is helping anyone.

  • so is GA2G a friend of yours?

No. I don't have any friends living in any part of Europe, other than here in Blighty. In fact, I've never been to most of Europe (except Greece, once), and never want to go.

Never met the guy or lady, nor do I know them in any way. If I did, I would say so.

I am soooooo tempted to say what is really on my mind, but it would upset missmouse, who seems like a thoroughly decent person, so I shall keep it in. Good luck James.

  • ...the wheels must come in a pretty appalling state....

And that is why your last attempt at popcorn wasn't resurrected by forum bosses. The lock down will surely occur here also. Keep the hate.

  • Who made the last thread entirely personal, making attacks at each person who contradicted you?

  • Keep the hate. Some people are just born with it. It eats them from inside. Hating themselves so much, that it turns outward, then they have to look for something, anything, to throw their angst and hatred at.

Its tragic and embarrassing. Note, that this is not in Private, or the other place, so anyone of this forum can see the explosions of hysteria quite clearly; and form their own opinions, without the backup of friends.

  • at least, gag2 is one of those who is able to judge the products, not the seller, nor the past.

i'm wondering why i do this for all these haters, but:

this is the original thread on the austrian forums i came from:
    http://nyx.at/bikeboard/Board/showthread.php?145598-http://www.espressowheels.com-jemand-erfahrung-damit
(and a google translated version: http://translate.google.at/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fnyx.at%2Fbikeboard%2FBoard%2Fshowthread.php%3F145598-http://www.espressowheels.com-jemand-erfahrung-damit&sl=de&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8

  • I don't suppose the wheels are all that exciting, James, but you need to get over this obsession with the fact that a set were retensioned before riding.

I own a set of Campag Neutrons. These are widely held in high regard, and have some pro pedigree too (e.g. Paris Roubaix victory for a rider almost as big-boned as GA2G). At the time I bought them, I was in climbing mode, and weighed about 63kg. After 3 months, I started to become unnerved by a wobble at speed whilst looking down on the front wheel during descents at >35mph. Lo and behold, the front (24h radial (or maybe 22h, can't remember)) was out of true. The tension was all over the place. I evened them out (another gripe is ridiculous hidden nipples), and they've been fine ever since.

I wouldn't say they are a shit wheelset though, or generally sold in a state that's not fit for purpose. Even though I got a slightly duff front, nothing catastrophic happened, and it was relatively easy to remedy, much like GA2G's set of Espressoes.

I think by now Ashe realises that it would've been better to ride them as received for a while, before tinkering with tension. It would've made for a truer review.

We should all just get on with drinking espresso, whilst touching each other in a reassuring but not inappropriately homoerotic fashion. That's what bike forums are really about.

  • at least, gag2 is one of those who is able to judge his wheelbuilder's skills, not the products, not the seller, nor the past.

    FTFY.

But seriously, we have already done this Prancer says something bad about them, GA2G jumps in saying he won't make it personal but does, spouting his psycho-analytical, superior-than-thou wanker attitude stuff.

    Can we move on?

  • reppo to vandal

  • Meh, wheels like many other. Parts like many other. Cheap knock-offs from China.
People will always buy them when on budget, but they're shit.
Then most bikes around are shit cheap death traps used to get from A to B.

  • We should all just get on with drinking espresso

    Yeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhh.

I dont really care about much in this thread, it all seems a bit handbags-at-dawn to be honest, but bringing out the old "i could say something right now but dont want because its to mean" type of thing is the behaviour of immature cunts.

Any brand new wheel should be checked for tension after 3months, your example is invalid. A wheel should not need any work doing to it before being ridden.

    Forum gold…

  • Any brand new wheel should be checked for tension after 3months, your example is invalid. A wheel should not need any work doing to it before being ridden.

Yeah, but the tension was shit out of the 'box'. They were true, but very uneven. I rode them that way for 3 months as I hoped the tensions were high enough to avoid detensioning, and I hadn't sussed out that the appropriate spoke tool was available for less than the ~£20 advertised by most bike shops (got it for a fiver off ebay eventually).

Lower factory QC than I expected from Campag.

And the Espresso wheels didn't necessarily need work done to them before riding. The reviewer happened to decide to get the tension wound up a bit. Chances are they would've held up okay (hardly a fragile rim section), but just been a little more forgiving over bumps and/or rubbed the brakes a little under extreme forces (if pads set very close).

  • (in reference to dj's deleted post and embedded quote)

There's absolutely no way she can be described as 'thoroughly decent'. She's James's girlfriend, FFS.

Who could argue with that? You clearly know me better than I thought Scarlett ;)

  • As BMMF has made reference to it, I shall reinstate my post.

Don't make this personal James. Typically, it just makes you seem so petty.

What kind of retarded hypocrite are you that you say not to make this personal and then bring my girlfriend's name into the debate?

  • Who could argue with that? You clearly know me better than I thought Scarlett ;)

Hard-wired indecency is the key to a happy and fulfilling relationship.
