Does anyone know anything about gardening?

  • I planted this last year and totally neglected it other than pulling out all the weeds at the end of last year. I do not deserve how well it came back! Seeing it is making me happy every time I come home.

  • Oh they look great, nice pot too.

  • Plastic everywhere under the soil...and not the type that lets water through.

Not that this stops the nettles... :)

Digging stuff up to make room for the hedges.

  • Love the pot, where's it from?

  • B&Q about 10 years ago I think. I love it too, it's a really good colour in a garden.

  • Star jasmine is evergreen and has a nice red tinge on new shoots and existing leaves this time of year.

They take a while to get established, so don't cheap out and get an established one from a decent place.

  • Just to let you know, if you want flowers on it then you'll probably have to feed it. However, it looks nice enough without them.

  • Has anyone had any luck planting tall oriental poppies?

I'm thinking of planting them in amongst this section where the wild flowers did quite well last year.

Soil is clay, but not too bad in that spot. Mixed midday sun depending on time of year.

As it's planted quite high I'm looking for poppies or other splashes of colour that will reach over the top.

    Edit: #list

    • Papaver orientale 'Beauty of Livermere' (Goliath Group)
    • Papaver orientale 'Patty's Plum'
    • Papaver orientale 'Avebury Crimson'
    • Papaver orientale 'Wisley Beacon'

  • I got some last year and they didn't do much. Hoping it's maybe the case that they take a year before they kick in.

  • Hmmmm... That's the sort of thing I worry about. We're yours seed or roots?

We've started buying plants for our new front drive/garden but there is more to buy so I really don't want to be spending a load of money on maybe flowers.

  • This is the first purchase. Carre Rouge. It's a cross between a dwarf version of the Red Robin and a normal Red Robin. So the idea is that it should stop at ~1.5m which means less pruning and the compact leaves hopefully give it a tighter, bushier look.

Should look nice against both the red brick wall and dark grey drive tiles, then echo the big star jasmine

  • I don't know if mine are "giant" but got some Oriental poppies in Autumn from a mate that I've recently potted on. Seem difficult to kill so far 😂 It's my fist time trying them. Do let us know how you get on.

  • Bareroots. They've grown some leaves but that's it.

  • First real sign of some colour this year.
These were given to us by my youngests nursery during very early lockdown so very pleased to see them come back yet again.

  • I have ear-marked a corner of the garden for a smallish shed, however it is behind two trees, a large apple and a larger something-else, how close can I go to either tree without damaging them? I'd like to avoid putting down a concrete block so was considering screw in piles, but obviously this carries a risk of damaging the roots. What are my best/cheapest/easiest ways of dealing with this?! Shed would be @ 8 foot square.

  • The mystery of where my Okatsune pruners went is resolved. Found them caught up in a patch of brambles.

Think these can be brought back?

  • Natures was of suggesting you buy replacement from Niwaki :)

  • Soak in wd40, oil hinges with chain oil.

If they move and cut ok, sand off rust and protect with mineral oil?

  • The niwaki crean mate rust eraser will have that off in no time

  • I'd just chuck them in some vinegar for a few days.

  • Ecobase

    or

    Concrete council paving slabs

  • Can anyone ID this grass thing I have in my garden?

It has quite stiff hollow stems, and produces sort of flower things at the end of the stems - the remnants of which you can see in the 2nd pic

It's pretty scruffy so I want to tidy it up.
