Croydon here so might need to stop just in case.... Re: pumpkins all the above, plus I used to make sure I got lots of manure before planting (not helpful at this stage, I know) and kept mulching over (tops up feed and retains moisture)

This is very neat! Pot will need to be on feet though but that's a good idea anyway.

Screw me! This is like a week right?

Cat 'owners' piss me off. They are no better than people that feed foxes. Although not as bad as dog owners that bag up shit and then hang it from a tree.

Also I hate thread >>>>>>>

in the past few months (i think it was during lockdown) someone posted a pic in here of their own garden. it was a walled london garden (or looked like it) with raised brick beds, possibly some raised brick pools. very nicely planted. little or no grass. anyone know what I'm on about?

Yes.
Was it Chris bmx?
Pretty sure it was re decking - so that could be a search terms. Maybe in the DIY thread?

Maybe a week and a half, lost track of time, but yeah not much! Due it's first cut now and will overseed to fill any patches

Cheers. Not chris (just threadstalked him) and his is fenced. This one had light coloured victorian brick walls (like sandy coloured brick that london houses are often made from). IIRC it was someone who doesn't often post in here casually dropping a stunning garden pic in and shaming us all. didn't get much reaction, unless i'm misremembering...

but yeah, wood/stone/water/grasses seems to be a winning combo

I love the look of it, but the amount of work involved and the fact I'd be covering my entire grass-and-borders garden with human-made structure puts me off. as you say, good inspiration though.
i've recently nicked a big garden design book off my dad, which has given me a bit of a bug.

ahhh we've gone the other way and inherited a split levelled decked & paved mess - so the idea of planters and not having to deal with putting a whole 'garden' back in is somewhat more appealing - in that anything we add is a step towards greenery.
what's the book?

Well done!
I think that's a nice balance.
Idk what your situation is but worth pointing out the risks of a design like that with small kids. You wouldnt be able to leave them unattended

my son's getting on for 4 now, but i don't think i'd add water anyway. people say you need a lawn for kids to play on, but our is too small for a proper game of anything anyway, and we're right next to a massive park with actual pitches.
@giles337 the book John Brookes Garden Design – the original version from the early 90s. It's possibly a bit dated now, but the design principles stand up (I guess, i haven't a clue about design or gardens but it makes sense to me).

It isn't dated in my opinion, I have yet to see anything close to its equal. If only clients would accept the costs.....

You have got to be chuffed with that!
Low angle photo for lush grass appearance FTW.

If the lawn is a decent size then with kids it's a no brainer imo. That said our lawn was tiny growing up so I mainly played in a simple den structure covered in Ivy with a Mulberry tree in it to climb. So I'd go for dens and climbing structures.
The other thing that's cool that I saw years ago and want to incorporate into a future garden somewhere is using jungle-style plants as water substitutes.
Basically imagine Mikenetic's garden with ferns and hardy banana plants in place of the water.
If you got really creative you could make a bridge and then have an under section.
EDIT: I think the garden I saw used steel cages as walkways and tunnels. Pretty sure it was a Home Front w/t Diarmuid Gavin where it was a couple with a little boy.
