  • Ok, so let's just go through how roots vs foundations actually works.

The problem here is that some soils shrink when water is extracted. Notably clay soils which are prevalent in London.

So if you have a large tree in proximity to a Victorian house, the water extraction of the tree can exacerbate the natural seasonal variation in soil moisture deficit, and in extreme cases cause subsidence.

I would not worry in the least about removing the eucalyptus tree in that photo.

  • On the hydrangea chat. Does anyone have a recommendation for a large (~2m) white one?

  • This whole neem oil thing. Does the solution seriously go off?

Working out the minuscule quantities to fit into a 400ml spray bottle is a ballache enough, but now this is saying I need to mix it up fresh every time!?!?

What are peoples' experience with it for aphids? Does it go off?

  • Neem oil is great. I use it all over the garden to excellent effect. The war with the aphids is long and attritional.

Can’t say if it goes off or not, I always use the whole batch I make up in one go.

  • Neem oil is a godsend. We just make a batch and use it over 1-2 weeks, doesn't seem to go off. It completely saved our beans from blackfly infestation

  • Cheers!

Will dig out a syringe and have a crack.

I bought 2l as it was better VFM and figured it'd last. At 2.5ml a time it will definitely last.

  • Apparently the leaves don't really rot so you'll be sweeping them up periodically. Do you have a pet koala?

  • Just about there with the Ranunculus!

  • We've been looking in on next door's chickens while they've been away this week, looks like they're getting rid when they get back...

Looks like we're getting some chickens and a little coop!! 😍

  • Brilliant! Hens are the best - just got in from a brief chicken cuddling break from my laptop. We get ours from bhwt.org.uk - loads of good advice on there. I’m sure others here will have some experience too so ask away if you have questions.

  • My OH suggested the idea, I was surprised she was up for it... She changed her mind twenty minutes later when she realised we couldn't have friend's dogs running around the place with them loose in the garden... I think we've reached a compromise tho'... Neighbours get back tomorrow, let's see how we go... 🤗

  • First tomatoes!

  • Check me out. This is not even using the cylinder mower, but a cheap plastic rotary thing from Lidl...

  • Better than Wembley.

  • Is it an optical illusion or is your garden on a big slope with a kink at the end?

  • It ramps up at the end of the top

  • It's beautiful.

  • Cheers. Here’s the view over that hedge in the right of the bottom shot. It’s a pretty special place.

  • The ball is for playing speaker skittles, right?

  • Last August I tried to plant a hedge with a few scrappy little plants from the internet:

  • 11 months and a few formative trims later, it's growing really nicely, and given me a reason to be genuinely pleased when it rains:

  • ..and the anti-alcoholic-fence still holding up nicely I see!

  • It's doing its job well! One guy who I've seen happily pissing in the road in the middle of the day walked past pointing at it and grumbling the other day, I was pleased.
