The only gardening I like is in the lady garden

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would ask on here.
Anyone got experience growing chillis? From what Ive seen most chilli plants look fairly happy sitting on a windowsill? Any good varieties to recommend/good websites to get em from?

I've grown the free ones that they gave at Wahaca, nothing special to mention otherwise.

Take a look at the allotment thread. Olaf Von was offering free plants this year.
The two I've got off him have about 30 chillis each, and are now indoors. The outdoor ones are still doing well. Oh and BRM was the expert, but his green fingers aren't as green anymore.
You're welcome to some of my outdoor ones if you want? I've a couple spare.

Snowy - that is offensive.

Im happy with any type I suppose as long as they are tasty. Im not much of an expert on chillis but the ones they have in most of the cornershops in Peckham and Camberwell are nice, Habaneros I think.

after the disasters of this year, i am going to go AS next year. you are local, no? i will save you a few for a pint.
put the ones you have now on the sunniest window sill you have and pick when they start to turn.
-
• #37
^^^Who is that to BRM?
Thanks for the offer snowy, think I would like to start from scratch though and germinate some seeds myself.
-
• #38
you.
if you are going to start from seed, wait until about march to sow. after the last frost. put them in an airing cupboard.
when they germinate, you need to get them into the sunniest place you can, but wait until overnight temps rise before putting them outside.
don't use too fruity a soil - they like the sandier, poorer stuff.
sun is the biggest factor, then water.

I dont have any plants growing yet, I am also gonna grow these inside. Hadnt thought about soil either, was going to grow them in some general purpose compost.
What are sea spring farm chillis like? Hot? -

i had a three hour session in our garden on Saturday afternoon. we have lived here for 14 years and our garden is fully established now, alot of mistakes along the way.. but I love working throughout the year and similiar to cycling where i notice the small changes in the seasons so much more which i find a joy.
Of all the gardens in our neighbourhood ours is the most worked on, we have fruit trees, large shrubs, fresh herbs, black bamboo, roses, a big venetian 'smoke tree' stumach, viburnum, philadelphus, physocarpus, trachcarpus, clematis, plus loads more. There was nothing here in 1996. Our rabbit is a recent addition and he has his favourite spots to chill out, and great fun when i'm working as he wants to be involved. Alas he eats some of the best stuff like the thyme and chamomile..
at the weekend I clipped our apple tree (cox's orange pippin), removing redundant and damaged branches from last autumn's heavy crop, so many apples in fact that i gave loads away at work. i also gave our Jasmine and number one haircut, essential every winter.. and trimmed alot off the bay tree. Quite a few of the better / umblemished bay leaves were given to LMNH cafe as a gift for 2011 this evening. The best thing about gardening is sharing the spoils.. I have just ordered a Persimmon for training against our sunny wall/fence, in three years we will have sharron fruit to add to the strawberries, blueberries and brown turkey figs already here..
the garden like cycling is my sanity..

This weekend I seeded a whole lawn, took ages to get it flat. I sowed and gently ranked in the seed to moist soil and have watered twice a day. Any other tips I should know?
Most advice I've found says mulch isn't that necessary, but it looks a bit wrong with the seeds just sitting atop.

has any one got a strimmer i can borrow ??? Herne hill brixton camberwell area, borrow for beers :D
Didn't know that "copper nails" tip - nice one. Apart from that just need to get in there andget those roots out otherwise they'll be back stronger than ever next summer. Just think of it as making room for that deluxe bike maintenance workshop you always wanted.
