  • Not sure why anybody would want to spend 8 years ferreting around on ebay to buy stuff that would perform worse than the rubbish you get on £50 Halfords bikes.

  • It's authentic though, Jay. :P

  • Ffs

All this fuss about what groupset to put on an old heavy frame to make it look right.

Buy the shit old groupset that would be appropriate for the frame and take it to drinks for other hipster faux roadies to admire.

Then go and buy a decent modern bike with the groupset you feel most comfortable with.

  • Or buy the modern bike first and then slowly bore friends, family and Lfgss as you buy your vintage groupset piece by piece off eBay and from bike jumbles.

You can then wax lyrical and refer to your "vintage bike restoration project" at every juncture.

We all do similar, at the moment I am borin everyone I know with 29ers, Chris kings, notubes etc etc.

  • All this is irrelevant as you should be running downtube shifters on that frame. I recommend Campag Synchro, because it is well known to be reliable and easy to set up.

  • My two comments above yours are totally relevant!

  • Get the hacksaw out and run it fixxie.

  • Fixed gear? on a bike? what kind of crazy talk is that?

  • I see Campag is winning the poll.........jus' saying

  • I think Horatio's words from Facebook are appropriate here:

Pfft, dura-ace! This is Athena! The goddess of war and wisdom! The name sake for the home of Socrates and Plato! The place that is responsible for the defeat of the Persians and saved the rest of Greece - and some would say, western civilization as we've come to know it - from destruction!

You would choose fishing equipment over that?

  • He made such a compelling argument.

  • Got the kids to make a 28 speed double from some spare mechano this morning. Works a treat. Just back from taking an hour of my personal best.

Thinking about calling it "Mech mech" and retiring with a massive fortune.

  • yes, ultegra 6700 with ultegra hubs mavic open pro double butted spokes handbuilt wheels, quill stem, brooks B17 etc etc

Colonagos look fine with Shit-man-no. And 6700 is a great groupset. The brooks though?

(I actually voted campag, but hey)

  • Wooo this classic steel road frame thing is really kicking off! What's next, retro recumbents?

  • What's next, retro recumbents?

I've got one. Has Campy on, obviously.

  • I'm going to buy up all of the recumbents in britain and store them at big yellow until the day cometh, then I shall ebay them all with a 200% markup. I'm pretty sure this is how Teenslain made his millions.

About a 1/4 of them are home-made. Your plan is doomed.....

Someone once said this to Jonnie Create and look where he is now!

    yo-yo's and puch mopeds

  • That Colnago is:

    A. Ugly
    B. Heavy
    C. Shite

Who cares what groupset you hang on it?

  • Dovvles

How can you say that about a shit heavy old bike, we should respect peoples desire to ride bikes out of their ill founded aesthetic considerations. It's about hipsterism over functionality.

  • I have to disagree that the Colagno is shite. I mean, it probably is for Dovvles purposes of being a weight-weenie, but it isn't shite.

    It is ugly, mind.

  • run Simplex.

my memories of these gears is grim.

    new modern all the way,

Sram for it's simplicity and fixability, you can rebuild sram, shimano no, campagnlo yes, but campagnolo is way overpriced.
