Ripper!
That's really good news, I think about this every time I run or cycle past the track on my way to the lido.

Only 15 years? That will just take me to 68. What then? Time for a campaign! ;o)
Great news. Congratulations to all involved.

They haven't quite agreed the 15-year lease, what Peter King said last night was that enough of an agreement is in place so that British Cycling will release funds to resurface the track. That was the big news last night (though it was expected). The resurfacing may occur very soon - depends on exactly when the money's there. The long lease has yet to go to lawyers etc.
-
• #235
How long will the resurfacing take? Will it put the track out of commission for any time this spring/summer?
-
• #236
From who I spoke with last night the answer is not known. Maybe in an ideal world it'd be done ASAP and the track would be ready and resurfaced and only delay opening a few weeks at most. But then I'm not a contractor ...
-
• #237
Neither am I but I would have thought that resurfacing in February or even March with the thread of frost would not be too good for the long term prospects of the new surface.
-
• #238
obviously being fitness devil's advocate, the longer they take to resurface, the more time I have to do laps of richmond park and get my legs back to an acceptable (ie, midpack obscurity) level.
But hope it's done asap... -

What awesome news. Here's hoping that it's up and running in time for Tarck Day!

That's good news.
Is the 15 year lease the maximum they're negotiating for?
-
• #241
The actual works of re-surfacing could easily be completed before the start of the season. Frost would be a concern, but there are products you can get to combat that. Those would obviously add cost.
What is much more likely to push the resurfacing work beyond the start of the season is all of the funding and pre construction work needed before a contractor starts on site. It's very easy to lose months at this stage.

Reckon RPM could give a it a quick skim over the weekend; bet he'd love to get his trowel and caulker out the shed.

Perfect solution. Track coaches should coach tracks.

Also announced on Mon night was that they've just been granted charitable status, which means they can start turning all the pledges into real money! They'll also be able to apply to grant making trusts and folks like Lottery Heritage Fund etc once they've got their charity reg number. Good stuff!
It was great to see so much support at Mon nights' event. A real sense of a proper cycling community pulling together. -
• #248
If only they'd told everyone, then there might have been more people there.
-
• #249
Why wasn't it announced? I have handed in a pledge form with my e-mail address on it. Would have been nice to be invited to the meeting. Would have been nice if it had been announced on here.

there was a public meeting last week. the monday event was a politicians' event for sponsors and (potential) stakeholders. it was a bit ad hoc though, my club knew about it because one of our members is senior in one of the big property companies. the room was full!
fab news today..
