Doing what for vanity?
Just the weight training, or extra core exercises? If you are weight training for vanity it's called body building and there is a ton of crap written on forums every day about it. Basically you address muscle hypertrophy at the expense of all else.
Funnily enough, look at the team sprint podium from this years nationals (last night) and there's no overdeveloped upper bodies or beach guns.

Well when I concentrate soley on cycling I end up with really big legs and a skinny looking upper body. I just wanted to readdress the balance somewhat and do some upper boy weights. I don't want to look like a muscle head or a body builder. Just a bit better blanced

^I wouldn't worry about that until you start looking like Mr Hoy.
Deadlifts usually help the upper body enough, and maybe some dumbell presses and bench presses, old fashioned chin ups...I reckon you can do a quick 3-4 week burst of hypertrophic upper body work if you get worried.

None of that requires the cost of gym membership? Bike to Richmond Park, find a secluded spot and do it there, free :)

- Find local school
- Address sexually confused Welsh PE teacher thusly 'I want to work out'
- Receive 'Workout'
- 'Walk' home is as best a manner as you can still manage
- Cry quietly in a darkened corner

I do like a good thread about training. I'm always intrigued by opinions and experiences. Here's one or two of mine.
OPINION - Maybe what works for one person should be taken as 'guidance'. If you have never lifted weights before, I certainly wouldn't recommend just going into a gym and 'just' working on squats and deadlifts. They take a while to nail and nerologically, it will deplete you - and recovery can be lengthy. Adaptation to this kind of training can leave you struggling to transfer to the bike. Total body training to start with - to prep the energy systems - would be ideal, with the hope to isolate later. (I've only written this as a precaution to total beginners looking for a resistance based programme, and i am not criticising anyone!!)
EXPERIENCE - This summer, my mileage has been quite high, and i have dropped a shitload of weight. I am no stranger to the gym, but i am going to have to start from scratch again this winter. I've lost a heap of strength, and fatigue very quickly in the gym, which is so damn frustrating. I have all these weights in my head that i was lifting - and started back in the gym on monday trying to equal it. In my line of work - i should know better, but alas, I am weak.
I was very interested in that abstract about core exercises. Interesting. -

^Definitely a good idea to have cautionary tales/warnings/disclaimers in the thread. It's certainly not a one-size-fits-all subject, although Team Terminator all seem to try to squeeze into the same size of skinsuit.

Cheers BMMF. Didn't want to come across as preachy....

This is why the prescription of training relies on information about the rider/athlete. Yet people will still dish out advice to someone they don't even know over the internet.
I find posts like Braker's hard to answer, because I would have to get a lot of info out of him to analyse before even committing to an opinion based answer. And that would take time and he would need to pay for that time.

Spot on RPM.
As mentioned in the past - I get really concerned about the power of the internet, and how many people take advice as gospel.
A few months ago, I worked with a chap who decided to include plyometrics into his rugby training, as he had read about the benefits of plyo training.
Goodbye quad tendon - hello new client....Anyway, I have a tendancy to throw my dolly out of the pram when it comes to stuff like this, but i really do enjoy reading about people's methods and experiences.

Don't worry RPM, I probably can't afford a personal trainer like you anyway. Just popped out at lunch and bought some recommended tablets from GNC and a bodybuilding magazine with loads of exercises in it - no squat-thrusts though!? looking forward to pumping some iron!

I'm wondering why Braker needs to join a gym to do circuit training. It looks like the exercises he mentions don't involve any equipment, and could be done at home.
They'd certainly help to shift some weight - well, more than doing nothing at all.
He'll be the forum's very own Brian Jacks.

We'll have to call him 'Record Braker', and bow down before his blood soaked* white tennis socks.

Showers at home aren't sexually confusing.

I think that might have been Brian Hooper, but I'm usually wrong.

Brake is 6ft 8 or something similarly ridiculous. If he bulks up to mahoosive he'll be pretty fucking scary looking.
EDIT - Just remembered he has the face of a 12 year old.

It's true... and i've seen the way you look at me, Dov.

Some interesting stuff in regards to mobility:
YouTube - Gil Hedley: Fascia and stretching: The Fuzz Speech
(Features cadaver autopsy footage)
But what if you are doing it for vanity purposes alone. What then?
