  • Robert Förstemann was in the Keirin last night at Berlin. He started at the top of the track in shorts 1-2 sizes too small. The gun went and like a bullet he was behind the Derny; there was a bit of argie-bargie with Stefan Nimke, but he held firm. Nimke then tried to take Maximilian Levy's place just behind big Rob, but he too held firm. Stefan settled for 5th wheel.

    The Derny slowly wound it up and suddenly Levy swung right up the track out of the saddle, swooping down just as the Derny pulled off. Before Förstemann could react he was two or three lengths behind. It looked like Levy had it sewn up but then from
    miles back Nimke launched an attack. Förstemann didn't know what had hit him! Nimke soon sailed past Levy for a clear win.

    Let's see if big Rob tries a different tactic tonight!

  • Stelle, most racesuits don't have leg grippers, in my experience of shorts without leg grippers they ride up when you pedal, exposing a lorra leg. It doesn't happen to everyone, or maybe some people have mastered the "pull down" at opportune moments

  • I'm bumping this thread as I would like to build my leg strength up a bit.

    I seem to be fine in the longer distance races at the track, but I just dont have the build to compete in shorter races and sprints. I really love keirins too, but find i'm just left for dead once the bell rings.... not through fatigue, but more due to the fact that I just don't have the power to keep up with the jump.

    I'm not hugely into the freeweights. Mostly because you cant even walk past the freeweights at my gym (Brockwell Lido) without an Apollo Creed wannabe looking at you like you just fucked his girlfreind.

    I have mostly been using the the squat machine, and leg press/extension machine, but it's too early to see any results as yet.... Also lots of stretching, and a bit of upper body type stuff. I normally do 3km on the rowing machine to warm up too.
    What I'm asking is, are these types of exercise/machines going to be building the correct muscles in my legs, or am i just wasting my time? Should i just man up, and jump in with Creed-A-Likes, and see how much i can gurn whilst squatting in front of a massive mirror?.... I really can't see myself doing this and keeping a straight face!

    Also, would upping my training gear to around 92" instead of 86" help?

    And finally, how often should I be going to the gym? Once the nights get longer, I hope to be training as many Saturdays, Sundays and Monday nights as i can make, and then racing on Wednesdays... I don't want to over do things. Would it be best to replace a weekend training session at the track, with a gym session?

    I dont want to turn into some massive freak like Forstermann, I just want to be able to put down some decent flying 200 times, and generally get a bit faster in short distance races.... (and maybe one day beat Jaygee in a sprint!)

  • By training gear of 86" what do you mean? You do the whole session on 86"?

    We warm up on 81" then depending on what type of effort we do and when the gear for the effort will be between 88-100"

    I raced on 92" for your usual non windy outdoor track race - scratch/points/devil so you really want to be training on your race gear.

  • I'm talking standard outdoor training at Herne Hill... Not race training.
    Saturdays at HH are more fitness orientated. 2 hours of rotation, lap gains, and through and off etc.
    For more specific training i would normally swap my gearing like you say... but I dont have a bag full of sprockets & chainrings, so am limited to 85" 92" & 97" at the moment.

    I mean just upping my general training gear, not race specific training gear.
