Ha. Dont worry. I dont think we were paying full price anyway. We're definitely not now :)
The thing is, theyre not losing enough money for a council to care about. Its a couple of hundred quid at most. Southwark events team are really supportive of the BFF, and polo in general, but the public safety people are much more concerned about the danger of having people breaking into their electricity supply boxes to mess with the timers..
Yep, there's no way someone's going to risk their job saying "ok, don't worry about the potential deaths, just get the lights working".
Yeah, thought it would be something along those lines. I still feel that coin opperated lights should get suggested to the council.

As John pointed out to me... having money stored in the electricity box may not be the best way to ensure it is not tampered with.
The council are interested in coin-operated lights, but there would still be restrictions on time/use (quality of life legal issues, environmental health, etc) and shouldn't really be needed as the land is more-often-than-not public (so monetary incentive is not civil/correct).
The only real way forward is to counter the safety argument with another safety argument... I walk my dog through there at night times, there are loads of gangs in there now, etc and push for a larger/tougher/secure box to be installed.

ah ok, circle format, so everyone has their own unique group. Makes sense now.

All valid points Jono, securer box should be the way they go wether its coin operated or not but this should be pushed as you say, get local backing etc.

I'm writing a letter and email this week, as will John (the BFF).
All borough residents/polo players should ring the council and ask why the lights aren't on though, it'd help heaps (and was the successful approach Kevin used previously).

I don't know if it's also worth mentioning that Kevin (and hed need to clarify parts of this comment) didn't nessiserily mention bike polo.

What about hiring some 1000W tripod floodlights (~£10 each for a day) and a gennie or two (2KW is normally £25 and would run for over 3 hours, you can even get silenced Diesel engines)?
4000W per court would be enough in my opinion, 6000W would be perfect. Although heading to the party at dusk also sounds just as good... basically £100 per court to be lit for just over 3 hours, plus fuel costs (often these are included in hire price).
That's what they had in Munich and it was perfect. I don't know the details about what wattage they were running though but it worked a treat.
Actually I remember, they plugged it into an outdoor mains supply, anyway, the lights worked really well.

Exactly. The problem isnt the cost of lights, and theres no real dispute about the cutoff time (wasnt it somewhere around 9.30-10?). From what Southwark told me, the real problem is the damage, and the danger of messing with the electricity. A box full of money will only attract more damage.
Emphasising that leaving the park in darkness brings its own danger is a good angle to take, as is a more general "Im a resident who uses the park and Id like the lights back". I think thats all Kev told them, which works because it makes it sound like theres a wider range of people using the space. Maybe even tell them your kids play there and now its dark at night its not safe for them, but theres nowhere else?
Should we move this to another thread, btw? Its not about the BFF, and it involves people who might not be coming. Anybody seen a mod around here?

so what time will this start john?
-
• #261
Im still aiming for 9.30 for a 10am start. If we move it now, its not fair on everyone from outside London who made plans to be here for then.
However, if youre already here and you want to get up earlier for throwins, do it :)

Hello,
I think I've only posted here once before but I'm up for this.
Is it too late to join? If so are there any spare places about?
Don't suppose anyone could possibly lend/ hire me a spare front wheel or a mallet?
-
• #266
In fact, I think I'll shoot down to Newington tonight to have a look.
If anyone sees a chap on a surly with bull bars and a brown hoody, that'll be me, James.

There won't be anyone there, see Souths thread.
I'm pretty sure there will be teams arranged on the day, but otherwise there is a list further up this thread of people looking for teams.

Oh cheers. Is the Peckham one going ahead?
I couldn't see south's thread in the polo forum.

As John said, there's a list of people who are looking for a team On the last page. So PM one of them. We might also try and Shuffle some teams up on the day if loads of people turn up teamless.
Borrowing a mallet might be possible, but do try and make one yourself. I think asking for a spare front wheel is a bit cheeky, if you're not comfortable trashing your own wheel why should you trash someone elses?!

ok Skoota, i ll do it today, so i will put all the name in a bicycle cap and draw someone !
As much as i think that it would be good to start early and that having groups in different time slots would be a way round it I feel that if people are, as Taxi says, traveling and might have booked tickets so that they could be in London for already publicised start then this needs to be taken into consideration.
I also really looking forward to meeting and playing some of the teams that are coming to a tournament for the first time (as much as i love all the regulars) and wouldn't want to miss out on that oppertunity based on travel arrangements.
