Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • Mercedes use two calipers on the front rotors of their larger cars.

  • It have been done, but mainly on trike.

  • Or tandems.

  • That too, but generally tend to have two on the rear than front (drum + rims brakes).

Tandem rarely have more than two nowadays.

  • I was going to post this on "oh shit" but everyone there is (rightly) talking about dj's recent close shave. This one is minor...

Riding up Rosebery Avenue, toward the junction of Amwell Street, line of traffic waiting. I am filtering up the left, slowly, particularly as I pass vans or buses (where I can't see if anyone might be trying to cross in front of the stationary vehicle). There's a fella on a road bike right behind me, which is where he has been ever since the Mount Pleasant traffic lights. I keep looking around at him, he should have gathered I don't think he should be there, but he is still there.

And whoops, someone is about to step out from in front of the UPS van, I see her and stop on the spot (discs innit?). Next thing is Mr. Roadie comes through airborne, followed by his bike. Hits the vans wing mirror I think, and sort of lands in front of me. His bike is leaning on my elbow, he is lying on the floor saying "ow".

He gets up and goes to the pavement, I hand him his bike. Said pedestrian is asking if he is OK. I figure he is OK, and getting sympathy, so I ride on. Felt a bit bad for doing that, maybe I should have said thanks for (A) stopping and (B) missing me as he flew past. Mind you, he should have not been up my ass like that.

Liking this, particularly the fact it mixes brake types on the same wheel.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me here in Oxford, just the guy managed to stop by cycling directly into my right leg at speed... and then he had the cheek to turn round and start swearing at me!! Just glad he didn't hit my bike ;)

  • I saw two clowns on a prick once.

Oooh nearly forgot I still have that DVD, Oli.

  • Calling myself out:

I've been doing some RLJing recently. (No messing with peds on green man, or forcing traffic with the right of way to break their movement/swerve.) But reading/contributing to this thread I felt myself sliding into that obnoxious holier than thou mind state: "I'm doing it right and you're all wrong" kinda thing. As counter intuitive/hypocritical/shit as this reads, getting worked up about every minor indiscretion wasn't overly healthy. Letting things slide is much easier.

  • On the subject of idiots and brakes, I hadn't adjusted my brake pads in a while and almost ran into the back of a car today when I managed to forget to remove my other fingers from under the brake lever and trapped them there.Excessive lever travel, whoops

  • ^^I saw a rider getting an earful from a ped for J-ing an RL today. Waiting at the light, I gave the ped a thumbs-up and told him 'well said' as he walked past me and got a 'cheers' in return. When I caught up with the RLJ-er, I call the ped out as a prick for being so aggresive therefore scoring points with fellow rider.

    Hypocrite and proud!

  • Thats just going to encourage him to do it again...

  • I guess you're right. Shouting at cyclists is unacceptable behaviour.

    Nerged and proud!

Er what? Sounds like the cyclist was a cunt, and deserved to be shouted out.

  • I think it was a joke

  • To the guy who crashed into the back of me last night when I stopped at a zebra crossing to let a child cross. I'm sorry for being in your way, you are right, I had time to get through because the child was barely halfway across.

To the guy who came along side me to berate my stopping and would not go away in the manner I requested. I'm sorry for holding your bars and riding you onto the opposite carriageway where had there been any oncoming cars you would have been in danger.

To the guy who berated me at the next set of lights for pushing him into the opposite carriageway and threatening to hit me if I tried a stunt like that again (before riding through the red calling me a cnut). I'm sorry for shouldering you into the back of that stationary bus, it looked painful.

Calling myself out here for not turning the other cheek after the first encounter and allowing myself to escalate the situation into something unsporting.

  • Hopefully he felt the pain that the child at the zebra crossing might have felt if he had cycled through him.

  • lifes an alleycat bro, u just gotta live it

  • It's hard to remain calm when the twats keep coming. (sounds a bit rude)

  • Wow, you shouldered him into a stationary bus? Don't know whether to lol or to condemn. I'll go with the prior.

He sounds like a cockhead though, but most certainly will leave the encounter thinking he was in the right now.

I'm generally not a fan of escalating things, but coming anywhere near a child who's crossing the road is utterly unforgiveable. A bit of cyclist-on-cyclist vigilante action for that specific act is very welcome. I hope those cunts realised why you did what you did.

  • No one seem to be punching each other anymore...

  • Just another morning on Holloway Rd for Ramaye:

  • TBH, I've leant on cyclists in similar situations. If I've picked a safe line around a stationary bus, moving in a gentle arc, making it obvious what I'm doing, I don't want some cunt squeezing up my inside and potentially forcing me into a wider position at the last minute, as other traffic approaching me from the rear might not have clocked the errant cyclist's imminent manoeuvre, and may not be ready to give me extra room. At least they have the opportunity to do an emergency stop behind the bus, out of any other danger. So ner.
