  • Just out of interest, why do you think I would not call you a cretin to your face? Did you suffer an iodine deficiency during your development?

Also, has anyone else had weird stalky or possibly threatening PMs from BCR?

James you wouldn't. I am confident of this.

  • Was really disappointed when I logged in today, no one ad 'nerged' me.

Whould it teach you a lesson if someone did? 0_o

Someone actually repped a few hours ago. Was quite shocking considering the general defensive responses to be called out for calling out.

So, The answer is no, then?

  • repped for bringing back popcorn without bringing it back

  • bigchainring is a troll, and has chosen this thread for his/her amusement. Which is a shame, as until last week it was a useful resource, I certainly learnt things from this thread on how to be a better cyclist.

Unfortunately, you can't argue with a troll, all the responses he/she makes are straight from the book of internet trolling (can't debate? attack the poster/declare the debate invalid).

So I suggest everyone just ignores him/her, as at the moment this achieves nothing. (and don't say you are ignoring, just do it).

It's a shame, as I suspect he/she has some valid points to make, but has hidden them amongst a lot of posts which do nothing except to annoy everyone else.

Finally coming up with an idea, but seems unable to take any constructive criticism of that idea, if he/she was serious, they would hopefully work together with others to realise that idea. But it strikes me as unlikely that's the motivation here. Please prove me wrong.

Anyone has the right to give anyone else advice, on any subject, and the person receiving that advice has the right to ignore it. But banning any advice from being given? no, that doesn't work.

Every cyclist will do some things better and some things worse. I have given advice in the past (usually well received), and I have taken advice from others (also usually well received).

If you see me cycling dangerously (to myself or others), please let me know.

  • To the flouro nodder twat on Old St this morning. The reason I called you a twat is because only a twat decides to bomb up the left hand side of a vehicle that is and has been indicating left and is in the process of making the turn started while you were quite a considerable way behind. And only complete and utter twat then calls the motorcyclist a cunt despite the fact that the motorcylist has seen that you are about to do this reckless and stupid thing and has in fact stopped to let you pass safely.

So yes, I called you a twat, and I am sorry if that causes you to hate on motorcycle riders, because we generally are on your side, but I did it because you are, indeed, a twat.

  • on blackfriars bridge this morning heading north, massive truck with trailer indicating turning left to turn onto embankment, a few cyclists already in front of it at the red light..

I stop behind it and leave a decent gap as you can see it's indicating to go left, about ten cyclists ride past me into the cycle lane to its left, can't get to the front as you could already see and just sit there, it starts turning left/trying to but still about another ten people who can actually see it turning/what is potentially about to happen cycle straight past me presumably just expecting it to stop/thinking well it's not gonna squash all of us or maybe just oblivious..

for what it's worth i felt bad for not telling the girl on the boris bike without a helmet who was last to cycle into the gap what could happen but i lost her on new bridge street - not because i want to be sanctimonious/preachy or becuase i think i haven't made stupid mistakes before cos i have but because she may well not have known what she was exposing herself to and she's someone's kid/girlfriend/wife/mam...

  • I stop behind it and leave a decent gap as you can see it's indicating to go left,

You could always stop behind it and close the gap? That's what I do sometimes.

If anyone protests, just tell them to go around on the right or fucking wait 30 seconds.

Generally no one says anything. They just stop.

  • I tend to do this as well but some bozza bikers just sit behind you tutting in your ear

  • his/her; he/she; him/her

    their; they; them, etc.

Apologies if this comes across as preachy or superior.

I often do this. They normally just bump up on to the kerb though...

  • Hello petit blonde on a pink Brompton, don't say "alright?!" like I've just overreacted, undertaking at speed off the lights is dangerous and impolite, and I will call you out on it.

  • I remember stopping behind a lorry when i was in teh cycle lane, as I knew It was just about to move off from a traffic light, and some bloke on a MTB squeezed past me and tutted as I was blocking the cycle lane.

I was so pissed off I shouted something to the effect of "Go on then! Go down the side of a lorry just as it's about to drive off, great idea!"

and as i said it the lorry started moving, and drove left blocking the cycle lane, causing the man to have to stop and lean over the kerb so he wasn't pushed off his bike by the lorry, all about 5 metres in front of me.

He didn't say a thing to me after that, hopefully he learnt from that stupid mistake.

  • I propose 'Are you next?' stickers/cards/flyers etc.

Give them out to these bad cyclists. They type in the url 'http://www.areyounext.com'.

Home page stats on deaths of cyclist in that classic blind spot. Bit of shock treatment, video? Also the video I saw recently on here actually showing how blind that blind spot is....etc...etc.

If someone handed me a card/flyer like that I would be curious. This community is more than capable of doing a good job of something like this.

Other than the slightly stalkery url I really like this idea.

    • Non-aggressive. (I really like screaming "RED!" but let's be honest - it won't change anyone's behaviour.)
    • Informative.
    • Simple.

Stickers would be a good idea - people always have room for a sticker and they can remove it later.

    +1

  • don't act like you care when you REALLY don't. If you do care then blocking someone is NOT an effective means of communication. How about a tea/coffee offer instead Roboto? That sounds nice to me. Maybe some Shisha...you are buying of course and then you can explain the reasons to me more convincingly. :)

    I care, I really do.

Trying to work out what's changed here gave me a headache

... the inherent danger of giving a card to someone who is not a great cyclist while they are riding along...

Stickers would be a good idea...

I like stickers. pre-remove half the backing, stick it on you, then slap it on the arm/back of anyone needing an "Are you next?" wake-up call, as you cruise past them...

These are all bad ideas. Drivers do not want to kill people, even if it sometimes looks like they do. The phrase just adds to some cyclists' already irrational fears and promotes a them-and-us approach which fails every time.

Calling someone a moron is a surefire way of getting them to stop listening and, probably justifiably, telling you to fuck off, however valid your observations about their cycling might be.

Have you considered cycle training is at least polite but if they reply with 'Have* you* had cycle training?' then where does that leave most of the people dishing out the stickers and the unsolicited advice?

  • If you're calling someone out, then call them out.

Explain why you're calling them out.

    Be helpful.

    Stickering is just lazy.

  • And to honest, if you have a bag full of stickers, you're just going to spend your time looking for someone / something to stick them too.

  • Addison Lee cabs, for eg. Policemen. Cats sunning themselves on walls. "Have you considered cycle training, Tiddles? Don't you realise you're sunbathing too close to a blind corner?"
