I was sworn at by a fellow cyclist for the first time today; I was in the middle of the lane, slowing down because of traffic ahead & out of nowhere a youngish chap on a black & yellow road bike undertook me in the small gap between me & the curb even though there was a load of space to my right! My response of "Nice, undertaking on the inside" was met with the raised middle finger being held aloft as he wobbled his way between the cars.
It took all my effort not to chase him down & have stern words, just made me realise how annoying some cyclists must be for drivers...

utterly appalling cycling during the nodderush along jamaica road this evening - of over 10 cyclists approaching a red light at a pedestrian crossing, only 3 of us stopped, and were possibly the only ones that noticed the man with his young child having to jump to et out of your way.
You're a bunch of cunts, and i hope you get herpes from a toilet seat.

me.
Fed up waiting at set of half abandoned road works on country road, waiting at red light for not much reason for 3-6minutes (my entire commute is like 8minutes).
Mount pavement, all the way, right at the end, some kind person had dumped a mini mountain of rubbish (and building waste) puncturing the front.

Driving back from Dorset yesterday I came up the Shepards Bush road from Hammersmith. Ahead of my 2 cyclists one behind the other. Anyone who knows me knows I have a very gruff sounding V8 engine which you cannot ever fail to hear.
Just before driving past these cyclists I gave a quick toot on my horn to let them know I was coming up behind (as is the correct use of the horn). As I went passed the cyclist at the rear with no look behind and no indication of any kind swerved into the middle of the road to over take the cyclist in front. Only thanks to epic control of my car was I able to move out narrowly able to avoid a head on with a south bound vehicle. This nodder then had the audacity to have a go at me at the next lights. I pointed out my cervelo in the back and informed the prick that he ought to get in touch with the CTUK to learn to ride in traffic before someone knocks him off.
I know from experience the anger that fests up with the feeling of vulnerability from a narrow avoidance of crash from a large vehicle. But no wonder drivers hate cyclists with so many people using the roads who have absolutely no idea what the effing hell they are doing on the roads.

Why blow your horn at them? Do you do that to all cyclists you approach? There should be no need to alert them if you're planning to do a legal overtake.
I don't drive so maybe I'm being ignorant, but it sounds like you were trying to squeeze past them.

Yes, technically this is the correct use of the horn, all but a few uses are out of aggression in the real world. If your engine is so 'gruff sounding' why feel the need to make even more noise?

To reiterate it was a quick 'toot' to create awareness. I often find myself doing this to cyclists to alert them to my presence when I consider (and here is the science bit) it is safer to do so than not. This is when there is a group to avoid this exact situation (an overtake when I'm coming through), when width of road causes me a little concern that I may have to pass close by (although never dangerously as I wouldn't), etc, etc. I couldn't anything more given the circumstances to alleviate danger except not pass, which it was safe to do (before the dork pulled out).
Eitherway I always come back to the point that as cyclists it is OUR responsibility to avoid incident in lieu of the damage that can occur to ourselves and the general lack of attention paid by drivers to other road users.

You should wait rather than pass close by, rather than toot your horn to alert them you're going to pass them regardless. If you gave them the space advised by the highway code you wouldn't have to have "epic control" to avoid a collision.

I got hit by a child on a scooter on the pavement today. Brakeless she was and crashed right into me with her helmet. Very funny.
-
• #2489
It's illegal to ride a scooter on the pavement. Some scooter-training courses have been canceled or made playground-only. Seriously.
You should sue. Try not to sound like Yoda though. Brakeless she was, compensation I demand. -

don't toot at cyclists it makes them (me ) mad
-
• #2492
To parked cars I saw some cyclists passing very close. To one of the cyclists I mentioned this. He answered that he knew what, doing, was he. Yes, hmmm.

• #2493
(When I drive) I manage to drive my car on roads with cyclists without once feeling the need to use my horn. I don't think many cyclists are likely to be able to translate the tone of the toot as it were. There's no need. They know there's cars about and I'm not bustling past them until I can do it smoothly and stay ahead of them without cutting them up.

I called out a chap on a SS/fixed bike last night for doing the one fucking thing you are not supposed to do - undertake a fucking lefthand turning lorry. Rolling up to the large roundabout between Blackfriars Bridge and Elephhant and Castle I saw a lorry waiting to enter the roundabout, but this guy ahead of me undertakes it slowly at the same time the lorry enters roundabout. The guy is squeezed out and has to jump up onto the pavement avoid something truly awful happening to him.
He took my gentle but ultimately concerned criticism while waiting at the lights at E&C OK, but FFS man you should know better. If you're reading this I called you out because I don't want you dead.

some right tool on a conversion last night going along Penton street up into Thornhill road, undertaking ,weaving between every car, even when the rider infront and me slowed down for the ambulance and fire engine you under took into the gap between us ... at 1st I thought you may of been a pissed off courier but on closer inspection, nope you're just a cnut..green brum(style helmet) weaving in and out of parked cars , nearly crashing into other road users..if you're on here you are a total muppet - go get some cycle training.

To the idiot who undertook me as a bunch of cyclists were pulling away from the lights at the bottom of Putney Bridge this morning and who then pulled out to overtake another cyclist (the one I'd slowed down for) when there was barely a cycle lenght between - us you are a twat.
To say you were nowhere near me is incorrect as you did not once look round to see where I was nor do you have much in the way of spatial awareness.
If you want to save time on your commute then I suggest pedalling harder. Why you did not try to moderate the speed you had gained going downhill when approaching a junction filled with cyclists who had just pulled away from the lights is beyond me. Perhaps it's because you were feeling a little bit tired this morning because after about 20m of the junction I, and a fair few of the other cyclists waiting at the lights had left you standing.

I toot riders on country roads who are about to do something daft. You can tell a mile off the newer / less experience/ less confident riders on the road, short sharp honk a decent distance away from them so that its not taken as aggression. Pretty much always get a wave as I pass.
Also having a bike on back or bike stickers on car helps reduce rider/ driver related un-needed anger, a bit like that jesus fish, but with wheels
