That is a stupid junction though, the two ahead lanes merge immediately after the bridge anyway, so it just creates a conflict while everyone is pulling away.

It's similar to the bit just before/after Chelsea Bridge (for those going East) which was 'fixed' (quite well in the end, and I say this rarely about the CS stuff) by the new layout with CS8 that joined Grosvenor Rd at that point. Similar problem, left turn only lane used by cyclists going straight on and then a road under the railway bridge that was only just two lanes wide and so cyclists were often choked out.

The fix was to make the left turn only lane straight on for cyclists too, put in an ASL and then make the road under the bridge one nice wide lane with a cycle superhighway on the left. (I'm ignoring the section of cyclepath on the pavement there).

I'm sure something similar could be done with the Cheyne Walk / Battersea Bridge junction.

It's on my commute too and sometimes I abuse the left turn only lane. Other times I'll queue behind a solitary car at the front of the middle lane (more likely to do this if the road ahead is mostly clear).

  • Enormous truck = just hang back.

Yeah, this is nicer, although there's still two lanes up to the pedestrian crossing. I guess it allows more motor traffic to queue, but I'm not certain it's useful - there's still the inevitable merge, and it's not that uncommon for the entrance to the blue lane to be blocked in slow traffic.

(I'm ignoring the section of cyclepath on the pavement there).

Yeah, I've never used that either. I always forget it's there. I suppose it might be helpful for less confident riders, but rarely see anyone on there.

  • Two things I'm seeing a lot of recently both on the bike and in the car that are boiling my piss! Presumably noob, self entitled cyclists who think they have right of way over everything in every conceivable scenario! Worst are the Sunday fatsos on 5k road bikes who I liken to the BMW driver stereotype "Indicate? Why? It's no one else business where I'm going"!
First, repeatedly looking behind you DOES NOT alert other road users of your intentions. Learn to ride one-handed and STICK YOUR FUCKING ARM OUT. It's not uncool to signal when it could avoid death. Car drivers are generally dicks; make yourself look as big and obvious as you can - when you need to.
Secondly, when approaching a junction and seeing a car to your right, it IS NOT ok to pull out in front of it forcing the driver to slam on his brakes or close pass you as most will do.
Judge the speed of the traffic and where necessary, FUCKING WAIT.
Now don't get me wrong; I know there are caveats to the above and specific situations etc. but these are issues I see regularly where conditions clearly permit the cyclist to do the right thing.

  • This...lost my shit with someone in our club for being a dick. No indicating, no shoulder checking and then forcing his way to the front of a queue of cars at some temp lights, which then the rest of the group who had stopped and waited got a load of grief from other drives.

  • Must admit I got it a row with another cyclist on Thursday as I was in a foul mood with a cold and he was riding somewhat dickishly. After he cut between me and a car that I was waiting to turn just before old street roundabout, he then swerved in front of me into a cycle lane just afterwards without looking behind.

I proper lost it at him and he just gave it large back.

Watched the footage from my camera that evening and realised I did somewhat overreact, but he was still riding like a dick.

I also realised that when I'm angry my voice rises about 3 semitones and I sound totally ridiculous.

This footage shall not be shared.

  • Three young fixie skidders waiting on the left/south side of old street as I approach from the East looking to turn right up Central Street. I moved into the right hand lane 40m back from the junction and I can see their looking at phones and directions. As I get to 20m back youth number 1 rolls across the road to head back East, 10m back and youth 2 does the same only coming to a near standstill across the right turn lane.

Called him a cunt and got on with my day, bumped into Phil, don't know online name, and cheered up notably.

  • Ah, that would be me I think. Good to chat with you!

  • The council is Chelsea who don't give a shit about poor people (no chauffeur driven car? too poor to live here).

They've repeatedly blocked TfL from improving the cycling infrastructure in their borough.

  • Full marks to the self-sacrificing bloke on a mtb who was going a little over a sensible pace on the pavement near Turnpike Lane station yesterday: upon being faced by me, my gf, her brother and our respective kids he heroically stacked it into a parked car and came to rest at our feet in a very sheepish heap. Luckily everyone found it amusing.

  • Two absolute knob jockeys, full Rapha kits and nice expensive bikes flying down the pavement as they were fair to important to be held up by traffic and red lights, narrowly missed being hit by a bus, only to then hop back on the pavement.

Que me getting grief from the van driver next to me, 'you're all the fucking same, think you can do what the fuck you like'

  • Calling myself out for an attempted trackstand that drifted over the line on Southwark Bridge Road this morning.

I had been doing it properly (in place) with backwards motion and everything but just lost it in the last 5 seconds before the lights went green. Seemed a shame to put my foot down...

On the plus side (forgive the noob excitement), I'm so close to being able to trackstand for extended periods now, provided I've got my left foot foward...

  • provided I've got my left foot foward...

    Doing it wrong.

Angle bike slightly downhill. Front wheel points uphill. Uphill foot forwards.

Road slopes up to the right, like a velodrome.

  • Easy in theory - I'm just much more comfortable left-foot-forward in practice.

  • Can't do left foot myself, I recon by doing it 'wrong' though, it'll make it easier to roll into the camber if you ever try to learn right foot forward.

  • Left (downhill) foot forward for me too. On fixed and road bike.

  • Either foot, sat down, no handed, with freewheel, on cargo bike, like boss.

  • what's up with these squads of kids on MTBs doing wheelies, suicide swerves, contraflows and rljing all around these days?

natural selection doesn't yet apply to teens, but I assume they're constantly en route to one of their mates' funeral given how they ride.

  • what's up with these squads of kids on MTBs doing wheelies, suicide swerves, contraflows and rljing all around these days?

I think that's @7Üp and the guys from SBC Cycles...

  • I can't help but applaud a kid doing a rad wheelie down the street on an mtb, such skills.

  • I wish I could do wheelies

  • Youth Critical Mass ?

  • Thanks for posting this. A very well reasoned and written piece of journalism.
