Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • I'm starting to get a bit depressed watching other people cycle in London. Hordes of cyclists blocking reverse-turning HGVs by zooming around the back while it's moving, flying through zebra crossings while peds are walking over them, passing other cyclists too close and too slowly right behind an obstacle á la Hatbread's cool story, no understanding of priority and giving way etc etc

Maybe I should start stopping my bike every so often in the middle of the road to start sobbing and crying and wailing and if anybody stops to ask I'll say it's because all these terrible cyclists are upsetting me. But then they probably wouldn't stop to ask.

  • They'll have one last hurrah this week while the weather's good and then they'll go back into their tubes to hibernate over the winter.

  • Saw a remarkable number of cyclists last night on the way home who seemingly had lost the desire to live. Favourite was the one who overtook me with no room so he could shoot a tiny gap and undertake a slow-moving bus while approaching a blind junction. WAC. Ruined a perfectly beautiful evening.

  • ^^ not before they abandon their cycle-to-work-scheme horrors on one of the few bike rack spaces at work. hi-viz vest draped over the saddle.

  • Odd one this morning, chap on a Scooter drove straight into me as I was stopped at lights, looked at me with complete amazement after he'd collided- a proper "where did you come from?!" look.

I had been stationary for a say a minute, on a bike painted bright orange and white, so I'm pretty sure he should have spotted me, but whatever.

He was, after that, extremely dilligent in checking left, right, left blindspot, right blindspot, then moving lanes.

So maybe colliding with me meant that he drove (rode?) his scooter more safely for the rest of his journey.

  • Now I really should meet her and make the judgement!!! :-) To be fair, we all jump red light at times no matter how much we want to deny it, but this person acted like she was on a mission to knock down a few peds.

you're already making judgement that we all jump red light.

I definitely don't, even on a peds crossing with no cars or peds to be seen.

  • Borrowed a van from work so got a different perspective on the road last night and today. Absolutely could not believe how many retarded cyclists there are out there with some incredible risks being taken.
Also very surprised by how powerful I felt sitting up there all protected by metal. The rush I felt when I ran over the chappie on the Charge was magnificent.

  • Don't you love it when you're driving along, pop the indicator on, check the mirror, get nearer the point of turning, re-check the mirror and bam! There's two idiots coming up the inside. Life can get quit entertaining when you're relying on your mirrors in a 6m long vehicle.

  • I love the inability to use the correct lane.

Yesterday I was in the middle lane of three lanes and there were two cyclists one in the inside lane, one in the outside lane. Both were in the wrong lanes, outside rider wanted to turn left, inside rider to turn right. Neither looked behind, though one made a half arsed point at the ground signal of his intention to move lane.

I was nearly sandwiched between the idiots as they both swerved across lanes just before the junction.

  • ^Just don't cycle at commuting hours. It's the only way not to hate everyone on a bike.

  • ^moved my working hours up to 8-4pm because of this.

London Calling thread. It's this way >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I hear that! I moved away from my beloved Fulham/Parsons green/Wests, to the extreme that I'm only 5minutes ride from work now. Main route from Parsons green to Wimbledon (5miles) was just getting f*king silly with other dickhead 'cyclists' trying to maim me.
Can't imagine doing the same length commute in to central London shudders

On another note - tried the wheels yesterday.... fucking awesome! Cheers ;D

  • So, why does the forum get up in arms when someone on the Daily Mail comments section says exactly what you can read in this thread?

  • It's 'cause they are generalising cnuts innit..

  • it's not physically possible to read the DM comments section and not get angry.

they must use blipverts or something.

  • I'd be the first to admit cyclists are the worst road users, but DM typically takes it a step further into psychotic run-them-down or homophobic cyclist-as-weirdo-paedophile territory.

When someone tells me all cyclists are reckless, dangerous, unpredictable, unsafe, etc, I can only disagree and say not all cyclists - most cyclists.

    Hello.

  • It is terrifying out there. This morning a lorry reversed into a side road, indicated to run right, busses cars all stopped, girl on old racer rides straight across the lorry's path as its about to move off!!!
I think most cyclist mentality is that of panic.
I wonder if the 'Noddergeddon' though will force motorists to be much more aware of cyclists, even though they may hate cyclists more!

  • it does beg the question why is there no joggergeddon, though the road standers are your less mobile 2 legged brethren

  • ^moved my working hours up to 8-4pm because of this.

Don't let them win. Simply commute along dual carriage ways. You get far fewer nodders and it's pretty likely you'll have to make a massive detour to find one so you have an even longer commute.

  • Out drivengering today doing the sort of things I don't want to do on my bike (and no Ed I don't want to borrow the forum trailer thank you) and had to be right on it not to run down two cyclists in the space of a mile. Had I been driving perfectly carefully and well within myself but not had my cyclists radar on I'd certainly have maimed one guy just by going about my business. Behelmetted MTBist of a fairly portly stature hurtled out of a give way street into traffic (me doing about 20) and then (in an ironic acknowledgement of the need to communicate with others) immediately signaled right with no glance over his shoulder and lunged across my bumper into a road on the opposite side. I had to slam on to avoid killing him (stuff fell off the seat beside me so not my usual silky smooth deceleration). When I chirped at him that that was a particularly awful and dangerous bit of cycling, he looked over his shoulder at me (not easy for him such were his skills) and promptly told me to fuck off.

He won't last I tells ya!

  • ^ sigh.

Did not know that, well pedanted.
