  • Not necessarily. I have a square taper cartridge bearing BB in my lo-pro which has the outer edges of the bearing outside the width of the BB shell.

    It's an incredibly rare boutique brand from the early 90s, I'd be surprised if there's another one in the country. A great design if you didn't mind a slightly time consuming installation, since the axle had no shoulders and end float was controlled by shimming between the cranks and the bearing inner race. Centre-centre distance on the bearings is about 65mm, and with 32mm OD bearings (6002 with a non-standard 5/8" bore) they occupy most of the space between axle and BB threads, so the cups themselves are ultra light.
