I carry a Duster.
If you carry a gun and something happens you're more than likely to pull out the gun and use it.
If you carry a knife when you're losing a fight you'd pull it out and stab him
If you carry a duster you'd pull it out and break their jaw and knock him out.

Normally just mini pump, patches, levers, spare tube, multi too, spanner to remove track nuts.
When instructing on bike check day: the above plus, cone spanners, 6-11mm spanners, Phillips and flat screwdrivers, pedal wrench, adjustable spanner, chain breaker, spoke key, needle nose pliers, Pedro's lockring tool, chain wear checker, cable cutters, cassette and freewheel remover.
Plus spares of bar ends, cable ends, ferrules, noodles, brake pads, gear and brake cables. And zip ties! Also some cork and a penknife if bar ends do not fit.I need a few more tools for the latter - especially headset wrenches, chain whip, tools for bottom bracket - anyone got spares of these?

@ The Seldom Killer what kind of distances do you usually do and how often have you needed the majority of those bits?*
*genuine question - really curious
I do audax riding so 200k in a day isn't out of the question. I don't use any of these regularly other than inner tubes, pump and tire levers. However, I have needed all of those items at some point and usually at a point where I'm in a remote location with little to no option of getting help. Collectively the rare use bits don't really weigh a great deal so I'd far rather they be permanent features in my tool bag than be hunting around for them when I'm going out long distance. When you need those things in the otherwise picturesque arse end of nowhere at 2am with an imminent epic fail and the temperature is taking a nosedive, you'll be glad you wasted that energy on your daily commute.
If I were to have a seperate commuting bag, I'd just have multi-tool, innertubes, pump and levers.

My multitool is Lidl, still good into it's sixth year. The Topeak I had before that, about 18 months.

Since the Bontranger Hardcases I haven't had any need for puncture repair kits or spare tubes. Still carry them if I'm going any distance though. Also:
Lezyne mini-pump
Small spanner
Multi-Tool
Lights and spare batteries
Tiny wee pack-a-mack that's totally rubbish and sweaty as fuck -

anyone got one of these? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/0364698/Trail/searchtext%3EBICYCLE+MULTITOOL.htm
also if anyone is around Bermondsey, Old Kent road, Tower bridge this arvo with spanners , that wont mind helping a brudda out/lending till tomorrow if your Skyriding. Please PM me or get my number from the numbers post and gimme a bell. Got a puncture and no decent spanners at the mo!
Bummer especially I'm up for Skyride with my little boy in the morrow! and his shining angelic face would be so disappointed once he logs off Xbox live!
The main problem I have with tools is that I can't carry them, I mean who can? I don't think I can fit murtle in a saddlebag, or dancing james in my messenger bag.
