Depends how much stick -out they were anticipating. The Italians seemed to like moving the seat lug up and using a stubby post. If there's only 50mm of stick-out then 50mm of insertion is more than enough

There is a rule of thumb, but that isn't it. In the absence of specific instruction from either the seat post or frame manufacturer, you are unlikely to go far wrong if you always have at least one part in for every three parts out, e.g. a seat post with a total length of 400mm should have 100mm inside the seat tube.
