Polo Balls

  • Cool , i'm glad they are sticking to 70 gram and 66mm too

  • Just saw the NAH ball and i remembered i've got to do a logo for my polo balls. Just wondering how to go about, whether to do an official looking UK polo ball maybe or just some comedy animal on drugs or something equally weird/offensive/inappropriate . I have not bothered with logos up til now because i can't really see the point and extra expense. But after visiting the factory in Bangkok a few weeks ago the manufacturers thought it would be a good idea so i'm doing it to keep everyone happy.
Jono it is the same factory i have seen with my own eyes!!!!!!
    So i am asking :

    1. Does someone fancy doing a logo ? If it gets used you win 50 quid.
2 . Should we have a ukhbpa logo ball ?
3 . Should i not bother doing balls anymore and we can all buy the Yanks NAH ones?
I initially started getting balls made because Franklins started getting seriously rare, and it was easy for me as i do similar stuff for my job. I don't make much on them, especially with the weak pound and commodity prices. I'm curious what general polo community opinion is?

    the logo must be smaller than 45mm diameter and could contain the following info;
66mm , 70gram , hot weather ball , PVC, Bike polo, made in Thailand, UKHBPA, and in Black

  • Harvey, we were playing with one of your light blue ones on the weekend, it felt much snappier and harder than most balls we've played with.

It made for really nice passing and shooting off the mallet, but didn't 'fly-away'.

Would that mean it was a hot weather or cold weather ball? At temps between 4-10 degrees it was perfect.

  • All the colours are normal balls, it's only some of the pinks which are winter or summer balls.

  • I agree,it's supposed to be a hot weather ball. The problem was the initial run of all the colours was a really small run so the batches of PVC mix was tricky to make up. The white and blue were a bit harder than the red and pink. It's one of the drawbacks of having such small quantities made up. Not a huge difference, but it's a trade off between hardness and low bounce. The new extra hot weather balls i have will only be good mid summer at the moment they bounce like mad. But in the heat of summer they will be perfect without sitting in ice.
I've been in the factory in Thailand recently and discussed this with the manufacturers, I reckon the fine tuning is nearly there. They have some glo in the dark options, and i have to submit a logo for the next batch. I think we are going to go with pink i reckon that was the most popular colour?

  • Sounds great, pink is good... You got a logo yet, RV?

  • I think we are going to have a competition to design it , cash prize and judging by a 16 year old tom cat

  • Pink is the best colour I've played with.

  • Harvey, maybe stay true to your spirit of non-official awesomeness? So crazy animals for balls (or whatever takes your fancy)? You still have the unique proposal of different coloured balls... maybe sync ball colour to ball thickness now (temperature ratings, so below 0, up to 20, and upwards of 20) and introduce a unified logo?

Offer Euro scenes a bulk Summer ball buy now, no doubt Fixcraft will push their balls to the main Euro tournaments for 2012?

My opinion is that you're well ahead of the curve and just need to push your balls to Europe a little more, please don't make us buy balls from the states!

Give me a whacky idea for your logo and I'll knock something up if you like. Going "official" with the balls is a little lame/predictable in my opinion (official ball of the UKHBPA, made in Thailand, etc)?

  • Pick an animal, do an Ed Roth/ Rat Fink homage with the letters changed to R.V. and the job's done!

  • Going "official" with the balls is a little lame/predictable in my opinion (official ball of the UKHBPA, made in Thailand, etc)?

Personally I think a sanctioned UKHBPA ball is exactly what we should be doing, I think official looking NAH logo is awesome, and is going to make people buy it.

  • Maybe. Maybe you'd be trying to beat the NAH at their own game?

(Marketing hat) I'd choose an official NAH ball over an official UKHBPA ball, but I'd pick "the original" RV ball over them both?

(No hat) I'd buy RVs whatever.

  • Maybe. Maybe you'd be trying to beat the NAH at their own game?

    Yes

(Marketing hat) I'd choose an official NAH ball over an official UKHBPA ball, but I'd pick "the original" RV ball over them both?

Why? Surely as a UK player you'd pick up an official UK ball above an official NA ball?

  • Use the teeth as a logo... It's already what represents you here.

  • Use the teeth as a logo... It's already what represents you here.

But we already know Harvey, that's not going to sell it to some new scene who's never heard of him.

  • pick an awesome and cute/funny/stupid logo it will sell everywhere NA and EU because your balls are great and the logo will be less serious that a 'certified' one and cute/ funny/stupid.

  • Why? Surely as a UK player you'd pick up an official UK ball above an official NA ball?

Nope, I'd see UK polo/equipment norms as irrelevant for the most part? I'd be wondering what balls were going to be used at the international tournaments (and by the majority of other players)?

Can you see France buying UK branded balls? I can't.

  • I think we are going to have a competition to design it , cash prize and judging by a 16 year old tom cat

    ageist.

  • Well, that's a fair point, in that case if I was Harvey i'd make sure I was official supplier of the Euros and Worlds this year, and get that printed on.

  • It should be a Dragon.

Cos Dragons piss fire on NAH and Phoenixes all day long.

  • Ed Roth's Rat fink is on some serious uppers.
I think Jono and Brendan are right if the american scene is going to have an official sanctioned ball then we should do something more punk rock.

Quite a lot of the french teams prefer a lighter ball anyway

  • Kibble choice method is a polo standard

  • bill is never happy being a tuna.

  • IMO you shouldn't write "UK" on your balls Harvey, as I don't like the idea NAH had to put it on Fixcrat's one.
It's not going to the international standardisation we are all expecting for I think.

That sayed, I'm happy to see some new balls coming, I don't care from where it comes, just hope it will be perfect to play all year long (easier than having different balls on 4 seasons).

And still in my opinion, yours are a bit heavier than Franklin, Harvey you announce 70g, Fixcraft announce 70g, so I will see if it's the same feeling when I will test it, can't know now if I will like this new balls.

  • Here's a not very serious suggestion, I'm not a branding guy which is why it's so shit...
