• yep - I don't use it much and most people who have repped me repped me because I made them lol

the one time I got negative rep it was for posting the lollacaust animation (so was probably deserved)

but both of these are about humour/memes, not bikes, so how relevant is it really?

obviously I don't know what other people get repped for, maybe my lack of bike knowledge is the cause

Also i don't think many people actually use Rep - to most users it probably irrelevant

  • This is not true.
Demand for rare track frames has risen due to (dare I say it) 'fashion' which has in turn increased supply (people sitting on old track frames are selling them)
Supply in this case is not infinite and has already out-stripped demand so prices have increased and will continue to do so until they hit their glass ceiling.
As prices increase so do the selling fees associated with them (think buying a house) if eBay charged 20p to sell everything then nobody would be selling their shit on here as eBay has a larger audience and a greater capacity for generating profit
Ergo, here = free, people are selling here to avoid paying selling fees elsewhere, if it remains un-managed classifieds will become 99% of LFGSS traffic .

I don't disagree, my point was that the amount of stuff sold on here is a benefit, not a problem - as you say the problem is how to manage it.

  • it's a benefit to us, the user, but the forum should also benefit (and not by "trickle down").

  • I use Rep for both. Funny or Bike related info good posts etc.

  • I wish there was a TRACK bike porn thread rather than one porn thread with loads of benders road bikes and crappy fixed gear mountain bike

Can I have the reputation voting system* like *now? WAC

I honestly believe that the fact that the classifieds are open to a more trusted userbase is more of a reason to use them than the fact they're free. eBay might charge a fee, but the users are less clueful and more numerous. So sellers will get a better price.

The proud lfgss tradition of "How much for that? You must be mad!" from people who have no interest in buying stuff is a useful feature.

But you're totally right about needing the management - if it turns into a free-for-all, the community will be screwed.

  • Another vote against banning of geared discussion from me. I don't think the forum suffers from discussion of geared bikes etc. There's plenty of other crap that isn't bike related at all, and that is ok...
There are also plenty of people with good knowledge to impart. Also rides don't seem to suffer from having a mix of fixed, single speeds, and geared bikes on them.
After all, It's all about the ride :)

  • Just had a thought regarding mechanics (or any question really) threads: A method of highlighting the post that solved/answered your issue/question would be useful for anyone searching with the same problem. They'd be able to quickly see what worked for someone else without having to read through the discussion on pie/crumble etc. It could help to reduce the number of duplicate questions.
This could be similar to the way Yahoo! answers works where the "answer" gets displayed straight after the question. Anyway, just a thought.

  • On the various classified threads what information is necessary on the main 'display all'
    page and subsequent pages ?

I think when people like hilary and other post alot of stuff there should be something stated with the title regarding how many items are availabe within that thread or there should be a a limit on how many items can be posted on one thread.

Also I agree on closing a thread if everything is sold. Or if there was
a column which the seller can choose - sold/closed,1,2,3,4,5 etc for amount
of items for sale in the thread then the seller could just adjust this column
and people could see at a glance if items were still available within a thread.

About splitting SIngle and geared bikes - I like restoring both and valuable information can be found out about both right here..

My understanding of DK's post was that he was considering discouraging the selling of geared bikes and paraphernalia in the classifieds. Not discussion, rides, porn etc. Note that his comment fell under the "Classifieds" section of his consultation OP.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but there is a danger of some FUD knee jerking going on here.

  • If I had may say I'd ban The Crumble & Pie Thread, Coffee Thread, Cars Thread and anything to do with Bike Polo

  • You forgot the football thread

Pretty much. Just a noise reduction thing, but then if we figure out how to better manage classifieds it just may not be necessary to reduce the volume of threads.

  • If I had may say I'd ban The Crumble & Pie Thread, Coffee Thread, Cars Thread and anything to do with Bike Polo

Just set the Bike polo sub-forum on ignore?

  • I don't disagree, my point was that the amount of stuff sold on here is a benefit, not a problem - as you say the problem is how to manage it.

The way to manage it is to restrict use to paying customers or 'valued' members(this will eliminate those hoping to avoid eBay selling fees) and allow 'valued' members to sell good stuff to good people for free or a minimal charge.

I honestly believe that the fact that the classifieds are open to a more trusted userbase is more of a reason to use them than the fact they're free. eBay might charge a fee, but the users are less clueful and more numerous. So sellers will get a better price.

I don't think this is right, the sellers we're trying to discourage are the ones not interested in the trusted userbase anyway.

  • ~~I am an, albeit unsuccessful, rep whore. When posting, I try to post things that might attract positive comments. I also seek to avoid anything that might attract negative comments. ~~

Actually, I'd better not say that.

  • You forgot the football thread

That's a stayer, it's about the 5th most popular thread on here

  • Correct.
I wish there was a TRACK bike porn thread rather than one porn thread with loads of benders road bikes and crappy fixed gear mountain bikes, oh thats usefull for going up mountains, definitely...

Prob is? sorry... UTFS or whatevs...

Can I have the reputation voting system* like *now? WAC

To be fair Benders do make terrible bikes.
I've had words with Mr Bender about this and he assures me he'll try harder.

When the revolution comes the football thread will be first against the wall, and the polo forum will be holding the rifles.

And there I was trying to make sure I didn't sound like a knee jerk reaction!

Pretty much. Just a noise reduction thing, but then if we figure out how to better manage classifieds it just may not be necessary to reduce the volume of threads.
Fair enough, but if the problem is the volume of classified threads, I'd suggest the answer is not simply banning the selling of a certain type of bike. I don't know what the answer is though, sorry.

  • When the revolution comes the football thread will be first against the wall, and the polo forum will be holding the rifles.

    That's fightin talk

  • Can we rename the Polo forum Crustyville?

  • IMHO-
Judging by the amount of reponses hilary gets for road bike equipment and how quickly stuff can sell your userbase must consist of a large number of fixed gear owners who are road(geared) bike users and owners as well.

Even a nominal once payment of £5 pound per advert where the item(s) total more than say 100 pounds is not asking alot really considering how quick stuff sells on here if its priced right.....

  • Can we rename the Polo forum Crustyville?
