Could LFGSS still work with a "no asshole" rule?

  • anyone here who has a decent knowledge of the subject could be eliminated as others could be intimidated by their depth of understanding

however the knowledgeable ones could also be intimidated by the stupidity of the masses

Or, and this is me just being crazy thinking out side the box person here, everyone could just be civil to one another.

You know. Have some empathy for some of the questions people ask, understand that there is a difference between "knowledgeable" and "know-it-all," that sort of thing.

What was the comment that was made after the Tweed Run about the day being a good reminder that manners count? Something like that.

  • I love seeing people ripped to shreds. Not big on civility... but then, I was bullied at school.

  • When some illiterate hipster moron comes on here and starts impatiently and rudely demanding things or gobbing off about a load of rubbish, I want to be able to call them a twat without repercussion of being banned, I want to be able to say exactly what I would say in "real life".

If we are forced to treat idiots with kid gloves and pander to the ungrateful then it's a sad old day.

    Yesss.

    Not the usual culprits.

This is true, but occasionally some posters are beyond empathy and do not deserve manners or civility, they do not warrant the time it would take to formulate a measured and polite response, a simple "you twat" will suffice.

    Killjoy.

  • Maybe...

If people stopped behaving like idiots (DJ especially) then nobody would have to be banned, David could go back to doing whatever it is he should be doing, Tynan could concentrate on being God and all the hungry Africans could eat a nice big dinner (served to them by naked Epifania clones).

    Very thin ice...

  • so it's time for my bum to go through the wringer?
    great....

Where Clive's arse goes, others follow

  • We need a naughty step for unaseptable behavior

  • 2 things:

    i) We'd be better off implementing a 'no arsehole rule'.

ii) A lot of bullying/arsehole types are skilled manipulators and deceivers (often unconsciously/habitually) and people on the receiving end of their poison take a while (anywhere between hours and months, or even years) to realise they've been made to feel oppressed etc. Therefore the rule would be most effective against less subtle oppressors, which I suppose is a good place to start, although they're not the ones who cause the deepest wounds.

    this.

Folk naming DJ, Slain, Pisti are going for easy targets-they're opinionated and highly visible on the site. But also fucking funny (imhop) and contribute a lot of knowledge and advice as long as you aren't being a dirty great weapon and are familiar with the search function.

There's plenty times (OnOneLangster a classic, more recently nyquil) where the forum has policed itself pretty well against 'rare' folk being sustained and determined dickheads, the thing that I think is most destructive is when folk are going over the top without any real need (e.g a recent thread posted by a noob that had no bad intentions and ended up getting flamed and tagged 'fuck off and die'.) which just creates a nasty vibe.

The flipside is that a lot of threads now seem to be an exercise in not provoking/offending anyone and well, pretty dull for the sake of it. You learn pretty quick that debates/arguments that are inevitably just going to turn into flame wars by people trying to antagonise so are fucking pointless and probably discourage folk from posting, which I find odd because most cyclists I meet in the real world are seemingly very decent, agreeable folks.

    back to meme thread

  • ...well I thought my math joke was funny!

  • As a relative newcomer my take is that this place would be a lot less fun without the aforementioned arseholes. I think a no arsehole policy can only be managed on a case by case basis and if someone is being a genuine cnut then they need to be reported, or put on ignore. Personally I think a few caustic comments can be quite entertaining. If we were to all be polite to each other and treat every post or question with awe and respect it would be a pretty dull place.

If people are genuine newcomers and ask reasonable questions they generally get a helpful, measured response. If they sound like a twat and ask a moronic question without ever utfs or doing any other research then they are often told so in no uncertain terms.

  • Perhaps people will consider their actions now Velocio has voiced his dislike (again) for the vibe of the forum, and before he does something permanent.

Should we take this as a warning and be less 'this is what the forum is like, so it's ok'?

I say we because I'm sure I've been an asshole to noobs because 'it's what the forum is like so it's ok'.

    Serious times :-s

I'd see it more as a case of either persistently being an arsehole either towards the same person(s), i.e bullying; or persistently acting in a unprovoked / disproportionately arsehole-ish manner towards people.

Calling someone a twat because they are rudely gobbing off is not a problem but being rude to any newby no matter what could be a problem.

Determining if someone is an arsehole is the problem, benevolent dictator, committee or popular vote all have their problems.

Fuck know why I'm writing this shit, am an arsehole for sure.

  • ...well I thought my math joke was funny!
It didn't get the recognition it deserved. I chuckled.

  • Part of the reason I liked this place was the straight talking opinionated people who populated it when I first joined.

I got flamed by our beloved Internet mum for my first post.

My experience of social functions is a bunch of twats being amusingly rude and caustic to each other.

  • I am putting myself forward to take on the role of 'final decision maker'.

The following users have been identified to be merged:

ade, andy.w, Balki, Buffalo Bill+, cyclotron3k, daimonic, Dammit, dancing james, furious tiles+, Gav86, harrong, kidboy, mikec+, pistaboy, Pony+, Sandy_l, Tiswas

Are these 3 statments related directly to each other?

It was never my intention to suggest that you can't call a twat a "twat".

  • i need to stop holding back with the content of my posts. i haven't been mentioned in any of the 'these people are arseholes' posts in this thread.

  • BRM:
which rock star will you be channelling?
or will it be beastmaster vibes?

  • IMO the forum's getting more and more bland, and has lost its edge. Many of the people who made it fun orginally have stopped posting, or only post on specific threads. I guess that's just evolution, but it's more of an issue than aresholes...

  • i have no idea what you are talking about, damo.

i was deadly serious. well as serious as i get, anyway.

  • I am putting myself forward to take on the role of 'final decision maker'.

That's good, cos no one else is stupid enough to...
