  • Spotted loads of them today as well, they are magnificent!

“You’re not allowed to participate if you don’t know what you’re talking about,” Hunter said. “It’s like the opposite of the internet.”

    Did Lol.

  • I'm a member of that group, I hope I never need to use their services but they work FAST and give really good advice.

  • Taken in my parent's garden yesterday

  • Had hedgehogs on toast for breakfast. Very nice.

  • This sprang up in my garden a couple of weeks ago. Any ideas what it could be and whether or not I should remove it

  • Looks like a type of cup fungus, possibly pigs ear. I'd not be overly concerned by its presence.

  • Looks like a big slightly dried out wood ear. Good if you like the weird chewy / crunchy texture. Dries well, can be added to soups, miso, stir frys etc.

  • It's not a wood ear although it looks similar, it is Peziza Varia, it grows inside in damp buildings too, definitely not edible.

  • A few cool ones found on my NYD walk

  • Don’t worry I won’t be eating it. I’m going to by some Chanterelles if I can find a source. They seem like a good intro to mushrooms.

  • Tesco sell punnets of wild mushrooms from Smithy which look pretty good, seem some with winter chants in.

  • Spotted on a ride this morning.

  • Either funeral bell or velvet shank.

I wouldn't want to confirm based on this image alone but the presence of a ring on the stem if it's there would mean funeral bell.

I haven't picked an eaten velvet shanks because I'm not confident to rule out funeral bell yet.

  • No sure if this is the right place to ask.

Looking to wander round the local woodlands by bike and was wondering if this was a good way to fine mushrooms to pick.

Would it be better to try and find locals to go with.

  • Not much about at the moment in the UK. I wouldn't eat anything if you aren't 100% sure of what you think it is based on a good field guide and ruling out any nasty look alikes. In France some pharmacists will ID your finds though if you are over there.

  • Nice find. May go back and pick it, apparently good dipped in chocolate!?

  • Yeah do it! Jelly ears are great.

Dehydrate them by leaving them on a plate somewhere warm until they dry out completely.

Then rehydrate them in orange juice or booze then cover in chocolate.

I've used rose water (turkish delight!), amaretto, rum and bourbon for this, all tasty.

  • Perfect. Will update on progress when things warm up!
