Not really sure what you're getting at?
TBH I doubt there are many ppl out there who actually need anything above 105 and while modern frames and groupsets are great they probably far exceed most ppls needs.
How many compete to a level where they need all this stuff? Older groupset and frames are still just as good as they were, it's jsut that now there is something abit better.

Would be my choice of current cranks, both for aesthetic value and because I can't get my head around SRAM shifting (and have a strange allergy to Shimano and a love of all things Italian). -

I've used older kit that was brilliant, to be honest.
I used to run a Ti frame with full Ultegra, flightdeck, machine built 16 spoke wheels.
Rode it for a year.
Got rid.
Never got on terms with it.Got handbuilt 531 frame, Dura Ace 80's downtube shifters, handbuilt wheels on 80's Mavic hubs, 80's Dura Ace calipers.
Still one of the sweetest bikes I've ever ridden.
I still curse myself for selling it.

These hubs.
Best hubs I've ever used.

^ Some of the prettiest as well.
In other news, Dura-ace is fugly. Although the new carbon cranks have something going for them.

I was just looking at SRAM's site. What's their fucking issue with 18t sprockets? What do people do for a workaround - buy Shimano cassettes (are they compatible)?

Think they were the first to use replaceable cartridge bearings too. Still got a pair I mosey about on...
Top end 80's gear whatever it may be is prob still better than your bog standard offerings today-some folks are happy to pay a premium for new kit for whatever weight/performance advantage they perceive it gives them and that's fine, but if you aren't looking to race then you should be able to get the most out of older gear.
Can't say I wouldn't like to have a full carbon sram red equipped roadie just for the shits of it, but quite happy with the increasingly mangy c-record scroungings I have on my steel frame!

Posting nice cranks and still no tunes.

Tunes + TA rings get the 2x tumbs up here.
I think they look a little out of place on carbon bikes though.
