  • BTW, 'triathlonwho?' sounds like he's speculating his tits off, in a fairly misinformed manner. I think his point boils down to: it's not safe for triathlonwho? to ride fixed in a group.

I'm one of a few riders on here who's topped 200rpm on the road. Generally I'd try to keep the max revs at more like 175-180rpm, so 35mph is not a problem in a medium gear - and 15% climbs are do-able, often at the speed of weaker geared riders, if not a little faster. With practice, the high cadence descents don't feel particularly twitchy; and I've taken far greater risks with a freewheel :O

One thing I've learned though, is that you burn a lot of extra calories on long shallow descents/flat-with-tailwind sections, so if the ride's more than about 3 hours, the risk of bonking is greater for a fixed rider if only eating when geared riders eat. You've got to squirrel away extra fuel.

  • Got some good varied cadence in this evening on an extend route home with this strong wind. a couple of 30 mph short bursts on a dual carriage way with the tail wind (Fuck knows how you get up to 35 mph BMMF) and some relatively minor hills felt like mountains with a head wind adding to the gradient.
