(for argument's sake)
it's exactly the right reaction.
"ooh what's that a kettle, ow it's hot"it's a simple learning path.
(end of argument's sake)however, violence perpetuates violence and i don't think it's a good idea.

If it were a 6' rugby player built like a brick shit house would you have belted him?
Not that I disagree with what you're saying, but it's kinda easy to turn around and belt a kid, but that perhaps isn't the right reaction.
Probably, and regretted it afterwards no doubt. I can't say for sure how I would have reacted in the heat of the moment. I just meant that that sort of disrespect towards women really makes my blood boil in a way few other things do.

Disrespect towards anyone makes my blood boil.
Except the stupid, as they deserve it.

I nearly hit a man and kid on my bike today (but not that near), as i whipped out of a T junction, but they stepped out from behind a car like that. The guy started swearing at me, and I turned round and said that it was hardly my fault nor did I think that was a safe way to ever cross a road with a kid.
I am in rural Norfolk so I don't think people are ever on the look out for a bike...
Now seeing that vid not sure if i would've come across a complete ass. -

I walked out on a mesenger a year or two ago on Torrington Place, cars only travel one way, cyclists have their own lane for bi-directional travel.
It was most bizarre while i was looking left and stepping out i heard "screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech grunt, groan, puff, pant". i looked to the right as i was curious what the noise very close to my right ear had been. I was confronted by a red faced, sweaty messenger, both hands in a vice like grip on his brakes (glad he had them or i woulda be T-Boned) in the middle of a track stand. I yelped with fright, which seemed to cheer him up, i apologised, he went on his way.
TBH i deservered to be clattered
Edit: However the guy riding the bike in the above clip was/is a twat for what he said, but the guy who got hit should have looked both ways, i always do now even on a OWS :)

Still an inordinate number of boy-racing wankers though. I just wish I could tell all the male drivers in this godforsaken county*: when I am riding in the middle of nowhere, and the only person I've seen for hours drives past me and beeps at me, I do not think 'how nice of him, he must like me'. I think 'I am going to die in this fucking field, aren't I?'
*It's actually very nice.

These anecdotes have just reminded me of an unpleasant incident I had with a courier several years ago. I was crossing Old Compton St and although I looked I obviously didn't look properly (must have been half asleep) and stepped out into the path of a courier who was flying along. I stopped in my tracks as I finally saw him and he kinked around behind me, between me and the kerb, as he did this he also spat an enormous gob onto my back. Charming.

It makes me absolutely furious, not least because, by its very nature, it won't happen when I'm with my girlfriend but when she's on her own.
Although having said that, I was with my girlfriend in Stratford station several years ago and one young kid in a group grabbed her crotch as they went past on the steps. I didn't see it happen and my girlfriend only told me it had happened later on. I asked why she didn't say anything when it happened and she said she was just so shocked she was dumbstruck. I hate violence but in honesty I would have absolutely belted the kid if I'd known.
i was with a friend who that happened to, it was an old guy in a suit as we ran down stairs at leic sq tube. just grabbed my friends crotch as we passed and then sprinted. my friend was really shamed by it, freaked out later when he thought i had told people and then told people it had actually happened to me. my friend is a 6' guy.
asshole pervs believe in equality -

I'd boast that I was an object of lust for random freaks.

I wish I had nothing to add to this thread, but from riding home from work tonight, I sadly do. In London's 'Glittering West End', Grosvenor Street, W1, the driver of a parked van shouted either 'cunt', or 'you cunt' at me; I didn't catch exactly which. I never thought to ask either. I'd done nothing at all. I thought maybe I'd prevented him from pulling out into traffic, but I hadn't. I kept checking until I was well down the road, and he'd stayed parked right where he was. He just took his chance and abused me for no reason at all. What a caveman. The pointlessness of it is what's depressing. I'd love to smash his feckin' face in. So to you pal - let's hope your life improves soon.

Some depressing reactions on this thread, especially early on before people felt which direction the wind was blowing in and shifted accordingly.

I lived about there for a short time when I was a kid. Flat and full of small people IIRC. Always snowed. Nice.

There'll be a backlash soon, and then all the borderline misogynists will revert to *X * behaviour = asking for it* (where behaviour ≠ asking for it, and X = anything)

If you think about it too much, you explode.
The actions and attitudes (perhaps not actual assaults) described in some of the links on this thread are intrinsically linked into accepted society, for example I just saw an advert for a soft drink like coke, which depicted a gang of men inventing a scenario so their "buddy" could "get the girl". The female was essentially an object. Women are objectified all over the place in advertising and entertainment media. So it's hardly surprising, given the level of intelligence among most humans, that this has been continued into "real life".

I saw that ad ... and it was totally shockingly amoral.

If anyone doubts the extent of this sort of reprehensible crap, read the comments here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/aug/20/street-harassment#start-of-comments
This makes me feel naive, really naive and I'm exposed to a lot of misogyny working in the construction industry.

My sister pays for a taxi between my parents place and hers (only 1.5 miles away) despite us having piles of bikes ready to roll. She like riding bikes and she likes walking. But she gets so much grief just like all the women here are describing. Sleazy guys in cars wanting to chat, random vulgar comments and such. She was also once attacked on the same route, but luckily managed to shake them off and escape.
This is in a fairly middle class suburb of birmingham which is one of the most sought after and expensive places to live in the city.

the blog's gone quiet
someone give her a bike so I can laugh at her misfortune again
(in the nicest way possible)
Hitting a kid is not the right thing to do but in Regals defense I would have really seen red if that was my partner.
I pretty good at keeping my cool and walking away (if I can) in road rage incidents. An eye for an eye and all that...
