  • this needs to move to a new thread.

  • Done

  • Could I have 2 please...

I'll need either a batch to the uk or kindly pole mule...

  • Quick question.

On a tapered ski pole, would you usually use the thin end (smaller diameter, thicker walls) or the thick end (larger diameter, thinner walls) to attach to the head? I've been using the larger end but have never tried it the other way round.

Any ideas promptish as i'm just about to get drilling, cheers.

  • mount the head about half way down the shaft, when one end wears out just use it from the other end. job done

  • i'll take two poles by the way gponx!
    thanks

  • Yeah, I'll go for a couple of poles as well please.

    Any serious answers?

  • I personally go for the thin end at the bottom - pretty sure most other peeps do to.

  • Cheers Rob. I only did it the other way round cause Rik mentioned it one time. I'll try it standard style.

  • i cut equally from both ends and use the narrower end. gives better balance of weight and the although narrower diameter, the wall is thicker. Just the way I do it, would like the opinion from some materials geek as to whether it is better to have bigger diameter or wall thickness for strength...

  • You seriously cut from both ends for balance?

  • I'll take 2 if they get to London.

  • Wall thickness is better... go for the narrow end. The only advantage over the larger diameter would be if the materials remained of the same thickness as you'd be absorbing impacts across more material.

Thin ends are more likely to damage other people's poles too, double win.

(It's worth noting that a thin diameter pole will fold before a thicker diameter pole, but we rarely invoke such a high impact in polo, really you're trying to avoid big dents, once the impact goes past 30% rigidity or so, a thicker pole is stronger, but by then both poles would be pretty much dead anyway.)

  • I cut both end. Not for balance though.

The very narrowest part of the taper seems to be too thin so I cut the bottom 2-3 inches (Pole dependent). Meaning the taper can be used to wedge the head firmly in place and the pole is thick enough to allow a secure fastening.

I then cut the excess from the other end to bring the mallet down to my preferred length.

  • ^ what he said

  • i don't cut both ends for balance.

  • I'll take two poles. Think this needs to be listed up..

    1. London: Loads of poles.
  • Careful, you'll get the anti-immigration lobby all worked up.
