There's something that has been bugging me for some time, a forum-wide issue.

I think it would be really nice if people 'on here' could at least pretend they don't enjoy making or reading jokes about child molesters. There must be some thing terribly funny or clever about the subject that I'm just not getting, but to see that odious creep crop up on one of the End of a Relationship threads was the last straw tonight.

As indeed there is about Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden and Jeffrey Dahmer, not to mention war, pestilence and famine. I think the thing you're not getting is the psychology behind joking about subjects which make people fearful.

Sorry, I don't really know. I admit it, I'm over-sensitive about this subject. I suppose I want this forum to be a place in which we don't have people trying to be witty and humorous when referring to heinous criminals, and where we are not constantly reminded of all the nastiness in the world (except in the news thread).

There's a middle ground between two extremes, but currently you're closer to one of the extremes. Perhaps some of the people making jokes are currently closer to the other. But the full spectrum is ever present, so long as most are in the middle of the bell curve everything is fine.

You could argue that, but I think you'd be wrong, for two reasons. Firstly, the thing which most permits the continued perpetration of crimes is not talking about them at all. If joking about them is the only way we can talk about them, that is still better than being silent. Secondly, there is a difference between making light of something (treating it as though it was of no consequence) and telling uncomfortable truths through jokes. I haven't seen any of the content you're complaining about, so I can't say which of these categories it falls into, but in general jokes about these kinds of subject are rarely intended to make light of them. If you really think somebody is deliberately taking the former position, call them on it.

Sadly, I think 'the continued perpetration of crimes' will never end. It's in human nature that some of us turn out kind and others turn out as fuckwits.

There will always be new criminals, but existing ones usually get caught only when somebody says something. You can't stop crime, but you can (at least temporarily) stop criminals.

Bring back national service, that'll stop crime.
