My father does weight training personal training, and firmly believes that once you have the basics you have everything and that all training is universal. He teaches cardio stuff too, but he reduces all cardio work to "progressive training", when it gets easier, go faster and further.
On all body related work he dismisses all fads and just preaches one book:
Strength Training Anatomy: Amazon.co.uk: Frederic Delavier: 9780736063685: BooksHe would say that a training forum would cover everyone from an out of shape commuter wanting to get up Notting Hill without walking, to someone wanting to improve their TT and triathlon times.
I actually believe him, but what we've seen in the past on here is that people think there's a difference and get intimidated by training when they think they're at the lower end of things. The whole "If I ride fixed gear will I suddenly get massive calf muscles." thing.
That's actually the problem though... it's not whether classifying things the way you and I would is right, it's whether that's how the majority (including all those silent readers and lurkers) would navigate and use it in that way. That's where I think it fails.

Beauty of a forum is that the users would contribute the classifications, and then they sink into obscurity if not used, so you would not need to define "Building aerobic base fitness" for example, someone would do something similar for you.
Just an idea anyway.

so if I get that I should be able to teach myself?

That's the premise for microcosm. That it's user constructed rather than admin constructed.
I can't even configure vBulletin to be like that, and the whole of the vBulletin internals start to have trouble when you have too many forums. It's not optimal at all.
But yeah... that's the idea.

re 'training'
Why not use the Cycle Training forum for all types of cycle training?
There's room for everyone there... lots of room -

Will will have a fit.

Yup he just pm'd me his veto.
I still think its a good idea as training is training whether to commute or to robubaix -

At teh moment any training related questions (nutrition and so on) tend to get dumped into the Running thread, or the Weight/fat loss thread, with some odds and ends elsewhere- I think Hippy started a nutrition one in Rides and Races, and there are some questions in the track forum.
Could we look at having a sub-forum for training? A lot of us are taking this aspect of cycling more seriously these days, and it would be good to not clutter up other sections with it.
I quite like the sound of this, put all the weight loss/ supplements talk in one sub forum.

What about training for track events or polo or whatever? They should stay in their respective areas.
-
• #5893
But as VB pointed out- fitness is fitness, training is multi disciplinary unless it's something extremely specialised like darts.
-
• #5894
Training for track sprinting = training for polo? I don't think so.
You can train skills just as you can train your aerobic or anaerobic capacity.
-
• #5895
I agree with that- but underlying the essential polo skills (drinking tinnies?) and track skills (sitting in a deck chair?) you have aerobic and anaerobic fitness.
Those are common to all, and to running/swimming/etc.

That's my point on usage.
Even though the principles are the same, people will look for training info near the discipline they're thinking of and will seek advice from peers even though other advice is still applicable.
So, until niche training forums appear... I'm leaving everything as it is.

Track training and polo training are of no interest to me and I can ignore them by ignoring the relevant forums. Nutrition or interval training might be of no interest to a polo player. Why lump them together? There is some overlap in say hydration or weight loss threads but enough for a new sub-section? I dunno.
-
• #5898
Sensible thought. Otherwise, it would be like putting the pizza, Bodeans, vegan, weight loss and bakery threads into their own section or merging all the beers threads.
-
• #5899
Or putting all the different sports threads together.
Football/Tennis/Cricket/Formula 1 etc.

Come to think of it, shouldn't the Naked Sailor, Cars and Pets threads all be in the Cycle Training section?
I wish I could answer this question. I've got one specific goal (Roubaix) but I am also just trying to become generally fitter and faster- which I think is true of a lot of others. For example Ed is dropping weight for his marathon, but the rest of the people are doing it as they are fed up of carrying around 12* lbs of chub.
There is of course no rush- I was just thinking about this as I rode in this morning.
it will be interesting to see what the new platform enables- get cracking"
