  • Yeah, it does. But anyone who thinks they're anonymous is just naive as I'm perfectly fine with outing who said what if it's crossed the line.

But it shouldn't have to go to the Wizard of Oz. This:
    1) puts you in the god chair
    2) creates another hassle for you to respond to
    3) doesn't seem like the democratic open place that you wish to have

  • I've always thought of anonymous tags as a bit of fun. Been some personal attacks of late though. Unpleasent.

  • Removing the anonymity does seem to be a way to make the place slightly friendlier.

    What part of this...

You, of all people, don't get to complain about other people's behaviour.

Unfortunately the forum software isn't being worked on... at all. vBulletin created a buggy next version, and this version has stopped all development. I'm looking at other vendors to switch to, and this has made me put the re-design on the back-burner too.

As it stands, with the core product not supporting removing anonymous tags and no work being done to change that, I can't do it. Not that it matters long term, as any alternative product is unlikely to even support tags.

    Do you not understand?

  • I am sorry I was not entirely explicit, if the taggers can not be identified could the tagging system possibly be removed? If people have something funny to say then perhaps they could say it openly. I am not aware of many people who use the tags for much other than humorous japes. Most of the time they are quite funny, but that is not due to not knowing who the author was.

Tags have been used in an underhand manner for a long time, this is not the first time the issue has been raised. Lynx for example has been continually stalked/trolled by some members. As such would it not be better to remove them until the authorship can be displayed?

  • ^Just beat me to it James. Also another chance to bring this to everyone's attention.

  • Disgusting was a little ott. I just felt that writing sympathy plee as a tag was out of order when he is clearly doing it for charity and a challenge, why put someone down for doing something positive, seems backwards to me.

It was already reported for a merge but I've chosen to leave it as the second post points people in the right direction and I figured some people might see that one and discover the other.

  • On the tag thing, surely the way to go is report the really ott tags? I tag a lot (mostly in the polo forum), and part of the fun is that they are anonymous.

I'd say that was the way to go.

Turning it off is a bit like trying to swat a fly with a baseball bat. They actually do provide some utility when used as tags rather than anonymous thread comments, so it still seems worth keeping.

I go through phases of tagging threads in the Bikes'n'bits section. To make them more searchable.

Cant claim to do it very often though.

dunno. Does it make this thread more searchable?

  • *"I need to find out more about the 5th floor crew..."

"hey try searching for Maggie's penis"

    "ah that'll find it"*

This guy has just started another thread looking for a Look track frame, can't find the other as look is a common word, which I assume is the reason he started another thread...http://www.lfgss.com/thread57130.html here it is

Not half as distressing as Denis found it though.

MT'sP links some of the most ludicrous threads on this site. Keep it but use it wisely.

  • i say no to outing taggers, no to removing tags. i rarely post them but i do often find them funny and the fact that they also serve allow users to say something without it being directly attributed to them is a more often a positive than a negative. not everyone wants to make enemies needlessly on an internet board.

if a tag is really malicious or untoward, and it's done by a persistent tagger, then i've every confidence VB would take the appropriate action.

  • thanks for the tags cull, maybe it works in that way to reserve it only for the most out-of-hand threads where it gets nasty.

Didn't she get rid of it a long time ago?

i struggle to follow the logic of your post, so people should be allowed to make out of order comments, the kind that cause ill will but its ok because the bad sentiment cannot be directed back at the person who made the comment?

in the past requests for the outing of taggers have been declined. Lynx for example has been persistently trolled in tags, but no action has ever been taken regarding this.

i have never had any problems making offensive comments directly, but I do find something very distasteful about the cloak of anonymity.

also velocio has always made it clear that we are responsible for what we post and he is not keen on censorship. how often has he stepped in and deleted peoples posts - very very rarely. it then seems an odd development for tags to start being moderated in such a fashion. part of this is because the community cannot direct their distaste at the perpetrators.

  • PM or on this thread?

This was a serious comment, how would I find the who tagged the rather offensive comments about me. By PM or request on this thread?

  • Lynx, mate, let it go, you are not going to resolve anything, do get to their level, that is very low...
