Stolen bike sub forum is a great idea.
I'm happy to help if needed (not in a mod way tho).I also thought the other day after OmarLittle's bike was recovered and 'that' tri-spoke, that it might be an idea to have a 'recovered bikes' section.
A forum member discovered Theo's bike in a barbers shop near Brixton which jogged people's memory that they had seen a few suspicious looking bikes in there.
If the information was collated, it might throw up some interesting leads.
We could also work in conjunction with CTF and Maz.#thinking aloud.

Why is this still in General and not in Classifieds and shopping?

I think there can be a problem with sub-forums being overlooked; the Rider Down one is a good example. I often miss new posts and threads on there in a way I didn't when it was just a normal thread though once noticed it does make it easier to follow a specific incident. Some way of making sub-forums more prominent would help.

On the subject of Foffa.
Dani assures me that they've made many changes to their practises in light of feedback (a very diplomatic way of putting it) from the community. However he also is concerned that the highest ranked Google results are the threads which are based on how things were prior to those changes. So he's asked if we could delete the threads.
My view upon looking is that there's an overdue merge anyway (4 current threads), but that I'm of 2 views:
1) I shall not censor... so no I won't delete the thread.
2) I believe in rehabilitation in all senses and actually believe that the internet would benefit from having memory loss so that mistakes and the past can be forgotten and people can move on without always having to live under a shadow. At first glance those things appear to conflict, but I think that we can do something that doesn't mean the threads are deleted and yet allows a business to learn from it's mistakes and improve.
So, what I propose to do (and will do in an hour or so unless a really compelling reason not to is presented) is:
1) Merge the threads
2) Move the merged thread to a non-public forumThe point of this is not to delete or to prevent the discussion continuing, but to allow for businesses (and individuals in the future) to put right their mistakes and move on.
By putting the thread in a non-public forum we publicly acquire a forgetfulness that allows the business to not be harmed going forward. I think this is a good thing, surely we want companies to hear the feedback and act on it.
So... any really compelling reasons why I shouldn't do this?

Dani assures me.
Has this been verified by Scoble?

When did he tell you he'd changed? He was on here, just a couple of weeks back trying to sell second hand, cheap frames for far more than they are actually worth;

I've no gripe with the fella, but he does seem to be someone who is hell bent on riding the fixie bandwagon and extracting every last penny of profit from it.

Indeed. I'd merge the threads, and add a new post that he'd contacted the forum to say he'd changed. people can make their own minds up can't they?

I'm with Monsieur P on this.
Is there any scope to have the threads moved back to a public view if his zebra stripes are unchanged?

This morning (or lunchtime... I wasn't online).
As I said, I'm not going to delete, but I do have a general inclination towards systems that forgive and forget... it's just that the internet doesn't work like that so that element of it requires manual intervention.
And it would be the 'Private' forum... as opposed to the one which I alone can access and allows me to sit in there rocking back and forth muttering to myself.

Yes.
If a new public thread emerges that implies that I am wrong in allowing it to be publicly forgotten so soon, then they will be merged (to prevent dupes) and moved to the public forum.

As long as there's an option of bringing it back into the light when the lesson isn't learnt.

too slow..
-
• #1291
Nah I'd leave it up there. Especially given your position last week of wanting to not give editorial control of threads to companies whose products were under discussion.
-
• #1292
That's why I'm split.
I won't give any company the ability to stop the discussion. That's not even a consideration, and was what last weeks furore was based on.
But I do want to balance that with the community showing that we are forgiving enough to encourage businesses to change their behaviour.
It's the latter that's harder. The first post of a thread is the most damaging and the one that's likely to be found by Google. I won't edit it at all, nor delete it, but if the business actually have changed their practises to address issues (I haven't verified this) then how do we acknowledge this and encourage that improvement? There's little incentive for a company to better themselves if it is unable to have that reflected in their online record.

Harry's post? I thought that was rather balanced, given other posts we've seen on the subject of Foffa
Can you merge it into a thread with an innocuous first post?

Shit, shouldn't have used that analogy. What are the odds on a Foffa sporting a leopard skin paint job in the very near future?

if the business actually have changed their practises to address issues (I haven't verified this) d.
I am to have no opinion on this apparently, which is fine.
The point was mostly that the mechanics on the Foffa bikes were shit.
A synopsis on what happened is Ian the psycho got fired and an actual mechanic employed.
This was never brought to light which I tried to illustrate wasn't particularly fair, hence the google results yielded under his name didn't reflect this.Over and out.

change the company name if you don't like what comes up in google.

CB chat?
Not too bothered, so long as it's not gumtree, eBay, etc. I only go hard-line to stop idiots, I let the grey area stuff go through, especially if it's likely to be of interest (track/fixed stuff and not a road bike or MTB).
