i was always told not to ask about salary at a first interview (i suppose this might be your 15th interview).
If you should be on £30k in Aberdeen I would have thought £45k in London was reasonable.
This is based on an approx 50% mark up in law - the only area I know - but your industry might be different (without wanting to incur the wrath of non-London lawyers, I think London lawyers work more hours and so get paid more for that reason, as well as just due to increased cost of living)

In my experience there isnt really a standar amount, best bet is to get in the ldn based job sites & have a look at similar roles.

easier to tell if we know what you do and at what level? Or at least give us hints
I know people in london on high profile jobs with loads of responsibility on 20k

You can live here on £24k M8

my salary is nowhere near a 50% mark-up. I'd say it's probably 5 or 6K more. It's all relative.

legal salaries are about a 50% mark-up tho iirc, or they were when I worked there; don't see why, it's as expensive to live in edinburgh as it is in london and you'll work just as hard

wouldn't sweat it. being a lawyer is the ultimate dud, so glad I don't do that anymore

thinking about it - wouldn't really want to / have the skills to be a lawyer - 50% mark-up is fairer than most though

Having lived in both, I disagree.

I get no more than my colleagues in rural parts of the country, I suspect many of them would be shocked to know it costs over half my monthly salary to rent a studio flat in a rough part of London.
Don't assume you will get London weighting or anything like that, a lot of people are simply happy to have a job at all.

or at the very least it could take some time for you to get it.

I'm the studio supervisor for a small modelmaking firm. I manage 3 members of staff, design parts and programme a cnc machine.
I was thinking of asking 4 - 6 k over. A salary of over 30k is getting serious in my line of work especially for someone of my age (29). Hmmm we'll see.

Yeah, of course, naturally- me too. But in my experience the quality of rented housing available in Edin shits all over what you can get in London, and is a fair amount cheaper. Combine that with the lack of travel costs (you can walk across the city in about 45 minutes and obviously cycle it in much less) and the fact that London was recently voted most expensive city in the world to dine out (can't remember the source for this so it might be wrong though...) and I would rather live here than in London. But- I personally have found wages to be higher in London than elsewhere, and the work is more exciting (in engineering). So the higher salary is justified by the increased living costs and the work can be more interesting which is just a bonus.
I have no idea outside of my industry though!

I would get paid more if I worked in Aberdeen, but thats just my line of work. Most places you should expect a 4 to 6K London waiting.

Anyone who works in the oil industry / offshores in Aberdeens wages are ridiculously high. Those who aren't get fucked over - the price of renting / buying a place is definitely inflated here. My mates 20 and went offshore for the first time a couple of months ago - 24k starting wage and he's got no qualifications appart from his highers.

Add 7/8k for London weighting, then add another 10k for buffer. That way when they make you an offer that is 3k below what you asked for they will think they are getting a bargin, and you sir, you will be laughing all the way to a trendy london booze house in trendy london.

@WjPrince - have you also thought that they might just tell him to sling his hook?
@BMXconan - you must have an idea in your mind. Your prospective employer will too. If you know anything about your industry, and are half decent, these figures will probably not be very far apart, and then its just down to negotiation. A £5k uplift in your situation doesn't sound unreasonable.
Disclaimer - I know fuck all about modelmaking (unless we're talkin airfix)
Didn't know where to put this but since the jobs section is in the classifieds i've plumped for here.
I'm going for a job inteview down in London next fri and I'm wandering what to ask for salary wise. Currently I'm being paid £24k in Aberdeen, for what I do I should really be getting between £28 -32k. How much should I add on top of this to adjust for the higher living expenses in London?
Cheers
Conan
