  • its just James Corden dancing in slow motion with a pair of adidas on. Watch it before you have your tea.

  • Heya Object, that article is over eight years old, do you have a link for something more recent?

BTW I'm not complaining or anything, I dont for a second believe that they've stopped paying shit wages for long hours, I'm just interested to read something a little bit more recent, you dont hear much about it in the news any more.

Apologies for the typeface on this one: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=421286101&blogId=529516555

  • Because even though its shit, its better than subsistence farming where you work night noon and morning to keep yourself barely alive. If you're working in a factory/sweatshop, you get to meet people your own age, experience a bit more excitement with city life, have a few quid to do a small bit of socialising. People will put up (to a certain degree) with the mind crushing labour and horrible conditions because its preferable to bending over picking through the earth for the rest of your life.

Obviously neither situation should exist in that people in poorer countries should get fairer compensation for their work.
    Nicely stated.

  • If conditions are so bad, why do people work there?

    (Not condoning it; just wondering)
Not everyone has the ability to choose where they work. That doens't mean that nike, adidas or any other corporate has the right to exploit people.

  • Perhaps all us near misses could fake our ages, looks, style and even shoe size.... I mean in the internet dating world it happens all the time.... .apparently..... ** coughs **

  • cyclotron3k, it is sadly because these people (often children) have no alternative that they are capable of being exploited.

  • "that's something their government needs to fix with legislation"

or perhaps we could fix by refusing to buy sweatshop merchandise, or just paying more so that the big companies have no excuse for not trickling down more reasonable wages?

  • Awwwww....see I was just killing time till the off and now you've made me get all serious. I might as well just stay at my desk now. sulk

I can't see that fixing anything. The company would be more than happy to take in the extra profit and continue to pay little to their labour.

  • At present, the corps claim that they pay competetive wages based on their turnover. If we paid more for the same items, turnover would increase, freeing up some extra cash for the workers. Then I wonder what the excuse COULD be not increasing wages.

Of course, we'd have to make it clear that this was the point. I think we all know what'd happen if we threw 150 quid at a Niketown (or flagship store for any other global sportswear brand) employee for that 20 quid sale t-shirt....it would never reach the intended party.

  • "Demand for the goods sets the price paid, supply of labour sets the wage price."

This pre-supposes that everyone is inherently greedy. I think we're socialised to be greedy. Changing our spending habits changes supply, because demand drives supply. Corps only make what they think they can sell. If no one buys unethically produced clothing, where's the incentive to make it?

Legislation is an extremely blunt tool, and a last resort in my honest opinion.

  • Rascale is a good looking lad.

Wonder what size plates he has..?

errr 8.5 actually....but I am away....shame if there were free trainers in it...

  • Being paid to drop e's, sounds great...

  • What thread were you^^ reading?

    See edit.

  • Just wipe your arse with the shoes...they won't want them back then.

Legislation is national and not multinational. These businesses are global. One reason they are exploiting children in Asia is that legislation and trades union activity prevents them doing it here.

We need to work to provide the exploited people with an alternative to sweat shops. Microfinance and microinsurance projects are the key to this. Set people us with viable ways to make money and protect themselves economically and they can have a choice and companies will be forced to pay a proper price for labour and people will not have to send their kids to work but will be able to educate them.

Sorry, while typing this I realised that I was sounding rather patronising but your posts do mark you out as particularly ignorant and naive.
