What mech is it? I seem to think the older ones were a bit more forgiving with tooth count, but one would assume up to 28 would be fine.

Ah, 28 then! I think they can be pushed to a bit more but shifting might be compromised.

Spent the afternoon making my girlfriend's mixte even more functional. The surly racks are beasty!

No, not for me at least, I only weigh 10 stone / 65 kg, the fork flexes a little through braking, and the stem flexes, which I'd expect.
If you want to talk about flex, the original wheels, now they were flex.
If i've got a standard road chainset (shimano 600 42/53) and a short cage rear derailleur (8s) what's the biggest tooth count I can get on the back?
