  • Track bike = steeper HA
    and according to Calfee

    The steeper head angle bikes are a little more agile, or require less effort to steer. People are usually very good at adapting to various head angle bikes if they have the proper trail.

  • yep, sounds like disaster. and certain death.

  • If they have the proper trail

    ^

  • Tubs on a town bike, radial front wheel, etc etc.

    I guess it's functional if the function is pottering around Shibuya looking pretty.

    If those are tubs I see what your saying, but if it can hold a bag on the rack, it has a function. Tenuous I know but it does.

    That purple one towards the top of the last page and that joe waugh I would say can do less "functions" as theres no mudgaurds or racks. Yes they might have sturdier tyres but really they are road bikes with swept back handlebars.

  • Simply that the track bike aren't the most nimble handling bicycle in the first place, adding a large front rack with moderate weight simply exacerbate it.

    I see, so it'd be fine if you wanted to carry around your mobile phone and wallet

  • More trail = stable, slow handling.
    Less trail = twitchier, fast handling.

    Track bike are bottom left;

    Track bike are bottom left;

    That one does have more fork offset though (would be more prominent if they were curved forks), more than you would see on most track bikes, and also it has a rear brake so maybe its not a track??

  • That diagram is brilliant! If the bottom left is a track frame, what are the other three? I really need a good book on frame design...

  • If you're of the TL:DR brigade, you might find this idea;

    http://cyclingtips.com.au/2011/02/the-geometry-of-bike-handling/

    First of all, when we talk about bike “handling”, we are basically referring to how much input is required to make the bike turn. When you hear about how”compliant” a bike is, it has nothing to do with handling. A misconception is that a soft riding bike is a slow turning bike. Seat say angles or how compliant the bike is has very little to do with handling.

    One of the biggest myths out there is that small fork rake dimension is a faster steering bike (fork rake typically varies from 40-55mm). This is completely false. People tend to believe this because most touring bikes have a lot of fork rake. Touring bikes are actually very fast steering bikes. At the other end of the spectrum, track bikes are not fast handling bikes. Contrary to popular belief, they’re very slow steering bikes.

  • Not gonna lie, no idea what TL:DR means, that article seems pretty good though. I'll UTFS for a frame design book, I love Jobst Brandt's 'Bicycle Wheel', I expect there's something from a similar angle. Cheers Ed

    HA!

    Too Long; Didn't Read.

    As for book, this is a great one to start without any complicated jinglo janglo;

  • I ran my bike like this all winter:

    I had zero problems Ed.

  • Has it ever been pointed out that this thread has possibly the wrong title? Every bike has a function and hence, is functional.

    Judging by the bikes posted in this thread it should be: Practical bikes. Not Porn not Anti. No?

    Tell me if I'm talking bollocks.

  • You're not wrong, it's just not interesting. :)

    This thread is for interesting bikes that aren't shiny porn balls.

  • Functional is a term that, in popular use, refers to what happens here.
    And this is a pretty popular place.

  • not this argument again

    oh, and that's the first IF I've ever kind of liked

  • That diagram is brilliant! If the bottom left is a track frame, what are the other three? I really need a good book on frame design...

    I had great joy in reading the Paterek manual. The old version is free online:

    http://www.timpaterek.com/tpmanual_pdf.htm

  • That's a beast. Any more info?

  • Probably a Rawland.

  • It's made by Elephant Bikes flickr set.

  • Has it ever been pointed out that this thread has possibly the wrong title? Every bike has a function and hence, is functional.

    You can also judge bikes on how well they perform that function. You can probably ride a steamroller with 32mm tyres round a track but its not the most functional choice.

    But mainly this:

    Functional is a term that, in popular use, refers to what happens here.
    And this is a pretty popular place.
