I like Riv cause they look weird af most of the time
-

The Rivs, at least the new ones, mostly look like they're built for old fat people who haven't ridden a bike much. And if they feel comfortable on those that's great.
But for example this looks fun

I resemble that remark.

Yeah that's nice.

...wrong bike

Anyone else caught in the 1functionalbike conundrum?
Got that 1 big tyred bike, and obviously it's chill and comfy so you commute on it, but you live in the UK, so mudguards are an absolute requirement, losing that clean, knobby tyred look, and adding fear of death by twigs and leaves when going even slightly off the beaten track.

I usually just decide that if I'm going off-road I'm going to be filthy anyway, so there's no point having the mud-guards or trying to get away with wearing normal clothes. Depends how easy it is to remove your mudguards though.
-
• #17763
I'm kind of the same, if riding on dusty gravely roads the guards stay on. But if going into woods or anywhere muddy I don't bother with guards and take them off.
-
• #17764
Removing and even more so mounting mudguards is such a faff though. Isn't leaving enough room between the tyre and the guard a solution?

Such. A. Faff.

Depends on the mudguards. I've got those flimsy roadie ones that have a little clip to release them. If you've got the sort that aren't designed to be taken on and off then yeah, it's not an option.

• #17767
Srsly tho if you have some sturdy guards it's gonna require quite a nasty stick and lots of misfortune to kill them
-

Jan Heine recommends 20 mm of clearance, that's quite a lot.

I’m using Schwalbe Thunder Burt’s with guards on one of my bikes (commuting, shopping touring duties). I take it down local single track, canal toe-path etc.

Currently switching weekly between 'guards + 2.15" DTH for town and dust and no guards + 2.3" Larsens for getting muddy. Strangely satisfying routine, though what little novelty there was to the versatility is now wearing off.
I think the trick is to keep two wheelsets and get set up so you can whip your guards off in a hurry; i.e bung for fork crown or problem solver (double threaded) recessed nut.

Here:
If you use these fenders with wider tires, you encroach on the clearance between tire and fender. We recommend 20 mm between tire and fender for safety. If you use a tire that is about 8 mm wider, you reduce that to 12 mm. The bike will be rideable, but it's less than optimal. I wouldn't ride a bike like that on gravel.

The 650B x 60 mm fenders are designed for 42 mm-wide tires, and their radius reflects that.

So even though we'd love to sell you fenders, we don't recommend using the fenders we currently offer. Unfortunately, no other company offers fenders in the right diameter, from what I can tell.

yes it generally works fine, until it doesn't. but if you have enough clearance mild singletrack is fine.

Says you.
Nah, I think I'd still wear clothes when riding it.
