It was popular in custom frame back in the 50's, yes it was to maintain easy wheel change, some people actually shift their chain onto the chainrest while descending so they can coast with comfort and without the whirring of the freewheel/hubs.
Campag used to make a removable one.

Chainrest? Say what? Is that a new addition or something thought up a long time ago? Guess its purpose is for when changing/removing rear wheel you don't end up with a chain in the dirt

Could we have a bigger picture please? I'm struggling to see that one

Those are sexy, now I know they exist, my tourer build MUST feature one, I guess the lever limit switch is the valuable collectors need only apply component? I can see the appeal, days from anywhere, last thing you want is having hands full of nasty grease when you've got no means to degrease them.

You may have to modified the shifter, especially an indexed one to compensate thought, the tiny button on the shifter as shown is a lock-out to stop you accidentally shifting to the chainrest.
It's great as you can shift and drop the chain in while in motion before coming to a full stop.

Hmm, you could use a 7spd wheel in a 130 spaced dropout as space is a little tight on 8/9/10 spd

I've got a chain holder for when removing the chain on my yukon, I can't shift on to it but It's handy to hang the chain on it when taking the wheels out. Lovely little features that make for a perfect bike imo.

^ A lot of older bikes have little chain pips like that.

That puts my gross trailer to shame!

Nice. CK bearing on the trailer pivot is a little excessive though. Nice but pricey.

I dunno it'll take a lot of strain and turn more than the headset on the frame (provided they are used equal amounts).
My trailer has a nylon bush and a metal rod for a bearing. Actually, I take your point.

Ok I was too scared to post a Planet X in porn, but this looks very functional for its intended purpose.

This thread has lost its way. Too many wanky boutique cyclocross and retro bikes.
