  • The 1x10 Crosscheck project is almost finished, the combination of DA DT shifter + Tanpan runs like butter.

Anyway, I'm unsure about one thing, is the chain too long?

  • How does it look when on the smallest cog?

  • Look fine, only appear too long because the chainring is small, it will also look too short when you put it on the smallest cog.

Keep it, you might be able to get a 11-42t cassette on it with that configuration (Sunrace make a 10 speed version).

  • I run one of those. Works great with that derailleur. Some of the jumps in gearing are a bit annoying, but it's understandable and you get used to it.

  • The small jump is actually nearly identical to a 5 speed block, it just got the extra 5 cassette with similar jump to get that range.

I think the main problem is that we got so used to having such short jump that we spend more time going to the perfect ratio than staying on a ratio and change when necessary.

  • I'm sure this has been discussed before. but what's the go-to mudguard flap material or choice? I've got an old 65mm chromoplastic I can cut up, but I've a feeling it'll be too stiff.

  • Id give it a try, stiff can be a good thing as my Raw flap has occasionally been overwhelmed and pushed outof the way by water when riding through puddles.

  • I'd try to use an old tyre if it was me. It should curve nicely.

  • Which derailleur is it? I'm stalled on converting my MTB , has an older SLX 10 speed rear mech, I've got the 11-42 and a Nw chainring, just trying to work out the derailleur I can use that will work without issues (clutch would be nice)

  • I've been happy with a Brompton one, you'll need this and this .

  • M786 + 40t front NW ring. Works a charm, shifts on the button and chain tension is always spot on. Even with the bike loaded up, I've yet to have a mis-shift or need adjustment.

  • Hallelujah. Will get one ordered.

    Is it "dynasys"?

    WTF is "dynasys"?

  • Shimano tech name for the newer 10 speed MTB groupset, basically to improve drivetrain effectively.

  • Yes but what does it mean I need a new 10 speed shifter despite having a perfectly good 10 speed slx shifter already. (Non dynasia AFAIA)

If so, which do I go for...

  • You do need a new 10 speed shifters because the old one isn't compatible (old have same cable pull as old road 10 speed groupset)

But if you ride with a single chainring, it's possible to run 11-42 on older derailleur.

Actually I'm going to do just that on my Elephants with the long cage deore derailleur.

  • Is it that you don't need a dog link or whatever they're called because the direct mount design spaces the mech out when mounted to a hanger?

  • I'm running one with an X9 Sram derailleur, also no complains at all

  • Nope, No dog or drop link. DM design just puts the derailleur below the dropout so it lines up with the sprockets better as far as I've read. Dunno about differences in cable pull though @edscoble Is that pre clutch stuff? I use a zee shifter because it was peanuts, which as I understand it, was one of the original clutches. Works a treat.

I know you can use the M675 SLX ones and they'll work just fine. Frankly though, any 10 speed MTB derailleur will work just fine. Shimano doesn't really advertise 10sp as capable of clearing a 42t if I remember right, but hey ho, it works.
Same way I found out a short cage 6870 derailleur will clear a 36t sprocket without a sweat.

  • & @edscoble Perfect thanks for the help. I want it to work as well as possible so will procure an m786 and whatever dynasys shifter I decide on after looking at them. Exciting times, but yeah so much contradictory info online about them dealing with 11-42 so good to hear it from someone who has actually tried it rather than just regurgitated something they read elsewhere.

  • Same way I found out a short cage 6870 derailleur will clear a 36t sprocket without a sweat.

Only because the derailleur hanger was long enough to compensate.

Case in point is the Specialized Sequoia's hanger being longer than usual.

  • It's all sitting on this. Swapped after for a 786. Didn't even need to push the B-screw. Wraps around the 42 without a peep.

@edscoble Good point that. It's on a bog standard Arkose hanger. Might measure it for length and see how it compares. It actually clears the 40t sprocket, but naturally, too much for it, so rubs and is noisy. Will get road link to help it.
Want the Sequoia so frikking much.

  • Want the Sequoia so frikking much.

They increase the price of it on Evans!

  • Yup, why I went for the Arkose instead.

  • lookin for a 1 1/8 carbon canti fork.
what options are out there without spending over £200
