This is pretty awful IMHO. John Cale's best cover, by far, is his version of Hallelujah, which became the definite version. Far better lyric selection than Leonard Cohen's (who sent him all the verses he had, apparently), and also a much better take on the melody.

Half agreed, Oliver. Cale can do no wrong by me, but I can live without the song 'Hallelujah' in any event - Cale's definitely tops the original though. And you're right about Cohen sending him all the verses (I'm a Cale bore), but he puts Heartbreak Hotel somewhere it wasn't intended to be with his interpretation, making the original pretty redundant for my money. He's done better stuff though, granted.
