  • ^^^ After six months of use over the winter, the repair shows no signs of anything amiss. And no creaking sounds. Super.

Nice one. Looks like you may have engineered it to be better than the original!

  • Yes, the cracking problem stems from the fact that Condor designed the frames with a straight-guage seat-tube, to save cost. As it's rather thin, mine has been reamed out to 30mm, and rather flexy, cracks develop where it meets the top-tube.

    No it's not.

It's due to the fact that the seatpost inserts were cut too short and stop right at the join where the most stress is rather than a few inches below.

  • Been riding my Tempo with no issues.

  • ^ Well lah dee dah!

  • Just sayin'

  • As I couldn't be arsed paying Condor £415 for a new frame, I went down the following route.

Used a hacksaw blade to get the shim out. It's 60mm long, and glued in.

Removed the paint to see the extent of crack.

Then I drilled holes to stop the crack spreading. Used it like this for a while.

Decided to get it sorted/bodged properly, and took it to Ted James who brazed it up, and added a pseudo lug over the top of the joint.

Will see how long it lasts, but it's better than throwing the frame out, I guess.

Ok so I have a 2007 Ltd Ed Potenza which has the shit shim setup. I really don't want a crack so I was wondering what evasive action I could take. Could I saw out the shim now and just fit a wider seat post thus removing the problem? If so what size post would I need?

  • Or could I cut out the shim and put in a longer shim?

  • The internet tells me that the 2007 Potenza was made out of Dedacciai Zero Replica, so maybe the seat-tube is not as bad as the Dedacciai 14.5 one on the Pistas?

When I cut the shim out I cut through the tube slightly, near to the slot on the rear - the tubing is really thin - so if you do try and remove, be careful. And there was residue of glue in the tube, which would be best to remove by reaming. I used a longer shim for a while, I can't remember the size it was, but it was too thin so I bulked it up by putting insulation tape on it, till it became a good fit.

    Do nothing...

Thanks for the info. Sadly I don't think the quality of the tubing is going to be too much of an issue. I was hoping that as it's a Potenza Ltd Ed. it would be less prone to cracking but the shim ends above the top tube so it's bound to crack at some point. I was hoping I could cut the shim, ream the tube then fit an OS post... I'm guessing Condor aren't going to be much help if it does crack, with a 2nd hand 5yr old+ bike thats been resprayed. I'm not a heavy rider, I love the bike though, I'd be gutted if it went. There's no Potenzas on ^that list tho...

    :..(

    RIP Tempo

  • MASSIVE CRACK on seat cluster.

    Gutted.

  • Seatpost clamp?

  • Nah the usual Condor issue. Seatpost and clamp holding it all together.

Felt like a full sus bike tho.

  • Does it look like a Canyon up close?

  • too upset to typ....

  • Dude.... Much sad. New bike time though....

  • I sell you back Pista. A few years with my avoirdupoids and no cracks. It's a good 'un. Or it's due.

  • I just bought this, not sure what it is. Has a columbus altec 2 sticker - will it crack?
