  • It's "Swain's", ffs.

    ftfy.
I'll see how settled I get this afternoon, still dripping down south.

  • ^I was going for the OS maps version. They're not big on apostrophes.

  • I follow google, but I don't trust it. Swains will do just fine for me. Need an extra source for finality.

  • Streetview/signage suggests Swain's. Funnily, the streetview car must have visited at two very separate times- the pub on the SE corner of the roundabout completely changes as you follow from highgate road on to swain's.

  • *Swain *often meant lover, and there were examples of roads called Swains' Lane i.e.* Lovers' Lane*.

So if we're to assume that the road was a haunt of more than one (probably gothic, graveyard fascinated) lover, Swain's is definitely wrong.

What's probably happened is that the original plural apostrophe was dropped, but some dicksplash along the line has decided it needs to be reapostrophised, and referred to an individual called Swain.

Bearing all that in mind, I'd say Swains is the least troublesome option for an apostrophe-illiterate population, but purists would go for Swains'.

  • ^^and even if it's a family name (Swayne), it would be rude not to include all members of the family; so plural again, if at all.

  • giles bringmemyfix in dictionary corner.

  • Check, and mate.

  • Banging away at Vorderman's teaser.

  • If things remain as they are, I will at least start the HoP.

    See you kids later.

  • Well the weather's fine and there's no excuse not to be out there.

I just spent the last 90 minutes at Edwardes trying to sort out my wonky cassette problem and am running so far behind schedule I've given up on the schedule all together.

Cassette woes solution: It's not the freehub (hooray!), it is instead an unfortunate combination of twisted chain, bent sprocket and a fucked tooth on the chainring, sustained while inappropriately pushing up Hesiers Hill on that BMMF excursion a while back, and all of which has been bodged back to sort-of-functioning linearity with no expenditure from myself. Which is nice.
They did, however, manage to slyly acquire one of my water bottles which I must go back and reclaim tomorrow.

Enjoy the hour, little rangers, may we meet again soon.

  • 25 miles, 8 and a bit laps. 21.5 mph. That'll do me for the night.

Where were you? I didn't see you?

  • Slowpoke hour for me, this week. I stuck with Sasmon for all of 30 seconds before falling away, then I watched as a small precession of pricey sportswear passed by. One Rapha-clad chappy did provide company for a few laps; though I suspect he was taking a break.

Still, a consistent spin, and a valuable opportunity to assess the jazzy new shoes what I bought in Condor's end of season sale. I've had a tricky time sorting out the cleats, but I'm now pretty sure that I'm on the money.

Bad luck about your bike, Tom, or is it good news? S'difficult to tell.

That might have been me (red long sleeve jersey?). I did a couple of laps around 8, but (somewhat shamefully) decided to pack when it started to rain. Was looking like a nice evening up to that point, really bright moon.

It's not fixed, but it's working. Maybe. It was working on the stand, anyway - need to take it out and push it a bit, see how it goes. If it's fucked then it's, at the least, a new cassette, which is mildly annoying because I only just put that one on at the beginning of summer. Same for the chainring and chain.

I was doing laps. If you start out of sync then you can go all night and never catch/get caught by the other person.

Sorry about that, I kept expecting you to come flying back past. Normaly it's me dropping off the back!

    I am exhausted now.

  • ^No problem at all. Best to stick to a personally challenging pace, I reckon. :)

You were out a bit later than me, by the sound of things. By 20:00 I was doing egg on toast, while talking with my housemate about our annual moth infestation.

    Swayneslane -> Swines Lane -> Swain's Lane

Always knew it was a pig

  • Great incidental discussion about Swains. Lane name change geeks might know about this, but if not...go to Plantation Lane/place by aldwych...it has a great list of lane/street names that are no more (I believe one was called cuntegrope lane, or something similarly vulgar, as it was a well frequented street full of brothels).

    Looks like this:

  • I didnt see you Simon. I did laps with Rollerpaluaza. Got dropped, Will waited, got dropped again. By about the 4th lap I was riding better. We did a few laps with Rapha and that was good, brought my avreage up nicely. Thet all stopped and I did another two laps, half of one with Friday26th, nice riding with you. 9 laps in 1 hour 2 minutes. Not sure what that is. All I know is that my lags dont want to work today.

Yeah, we've done that link, and have deconstructed the nomenclature, and decided that Swain's always was a faulty variant.

9 anti-clockwise laps is 24.75 miles, so that's 23.9mph average. If you stopped at reds, that's ridiculous. Even if you didn't, it's a bit fucking fast.

  • PGM beating me destroying me in the race to a 25mph average :(
